I like the classical tiffany 6-prong setting very much. I found it would be beautiful if this setting has some sidestones.

I found one at James Allen, how do you think about it?

Since this one is 4-prong, JA will charge addition $75 to make a 6-prong one.

I also find another two similar to this one, the only difference are the width of the ring, and # of sidestones. I attached the links here:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/Platinum-Common-Prong-Ring.html 1.9mm/sidestone(20, 0.30carat, G-H color, VS2-SI1 clarity)/pt950

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-2855.asp 2.2mm/sidestone(18, 0.54carat, G-H color, VS2-SI1 clarity)/pt950

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/settings-with-sidestones/ring/item_58-261.asp 2.5mm/sidestone(10, 0.5carat, F-G color, VS1-VS2 clarity)/pt900

My finger size is 5, probably I will get a 0.9 carat stone, which size of above settints matches well with the center stone? And the last setting is pt900. What is the difference between 900 and 950, and which one is better for engagment ring setting? Thanks a lot.

I have one concern about the sidestones. Are they liable to miss? What if i find one missed one day? Any life-time guarantee for it?

I am also considering to get a setting in the local store. Maybe they have better after-sale service, like cleaning the ring?

Stone,

Thank you !!!

I found this:
Pt900/Ir = 110HV¡55,000 PSI
Pt950/Ir = 80HV¡40,000 PSI
Pt950/Ru = 130HV¡66,000 PSI
Pt950/Co = 135HV¡64,000 PSI

Does it mean that Pt950/Ru is better than Pt950/Ir since both the hardness and durability are better?

I also noticed that the materials of the prong are important.
" For the prongs they have implications: For instance, white gold prongs will break. Yellow gold prongs will bend more, as will platinum, but platinum prongs are more durable over time."

Is it possible that a platium setting has a non-platium prong? sounds like a stupid question. hehe

Yap, PT950/Ru is one of the best alloy, but more difficult to work with so not that popular with jewelers.

It is possible to get gold prongs on Pt setting and vice versa, if the head is not an integrated design.

I just called JA. Their platium settints are Pt950/Ir. :)

What about the Pt900?

It is also Ir.

Good to know.

A friend recommended this to me: six-prong pave setting from JA.

Any comments?

It''s 2.6 mm wide. My potential center stone is probably 0.9 carat and my finger size is 5. Maybe 2.6mm is too wide to make the stone center look smaller? Should I get 2mm one? Thank you.

2mm is very thin , I''d like you to go for a bit wider but that''s just me....

Kaleigh, thank you.

I haven''t tried the settings in local store so right now I have no idea which width I should choose.

I think 2.6mm is too wide for a 0.90 carat center stone and size 5 finger because I found a diamond picture in which the lady''s finger size is almost same with me and the 2.6mm setting makes the center stone looks smaller. :)
