how do you rate an antique ring?

I just stumbled upon a ring whose design I find really interesting.
however, it comes without certification from a private seller, so there are no guarantees on the quality of the materials.
it's clear that with antique rings parameter might be different, but I am by no means an expert.
the seller states that the stones are very white and clear. hmmm...
how do you evaluate older rings? and what do you think about this one?

I see a lot of people read the post and don't post back...
if you think it's ugly or also just.. meh.. please tell me!!
I'm really interested in your opinion :read:

Hi dianabarbara,

Are you interested in our opinion of the style and aesthetic appeal of the ring? Or our thoughts on how to evaluate it concerning quality and/or value?

As you might know, for most posters here the information you have isn't much to go on, and unfortunately there's not much that can be learned from looking at the picture. It's a bypass ring style, but I can't tell the cut, color, clarity, carat, etc of the diamonds. Don't know the metal of the ring either. Does the seller have a return policy? If so, you could always purchase the ring, have it evaluated by your own expert, and then decide if it's what you want.

I'm no expert, but it does seem there are different and sometimes more lax rules for evaluating older cuts versus RBs. Certainly ASET technology can be helpful, but doesn't seem to be a requirement. I think a lot of people judge older cuts using their naked eye, and look for signs of trouble like inactivity of facets, etc.

Best of luck!

Do you have any more photos? I would ask for photos that show the facet pattern of the diamonds better. Do you have any side shots?
I'm no expert either I'm afraid! I would hit the "report concern" button though and ask the mods to move this to Rocky Talky where more experts will see this and hopefully reply.

Hi Junerose, thank you for your suggestions! I'll try to report this :)

I only have this picture, but will ask for a close up and a side view, so that some PSers can maybe chime in and give me some advice on this one.
It is said to be 18k gold, and that both diamonds are about .6 and H color and VS clarity.
Nothing is said about the cut (but from the setting I assume they are european old cut or perhaps transitional?).

My concern is that looking at the picture the stones do not look that white to me
It's anyways a very charming piece, so I wanted to hear other opinions about it, and understand whether it would be a good bargain or not

Yes, pre-buying questions about diamonds or diamond jewelry or settings go in Rocky Talky and you show off what you bought here!

I try to only buy pieces like that if there is a return period. It is almost impossible to tell for sure about vintage items without seeing them in person and having them checked out by an appraiser or jeweler.

diamondseeker, what you say sounds very right. thank you.

I have not bought this ring yet, as I also feel that I need to have some further info and additional more expert opinions before doing so.
there seem to be a return period, but the whole thing is not too formalized.
asking for an independent appraisal might be the best bet.

rocky talk, I'm coming!

:wavey:

please let me know any ideas/suggestions or vintage ring stories!! :twirl:

seeking opinions: can you help me with this ring?

I finally got another couple of pictures from the seller. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but maybe enough for now?

please, comment if you can! does this ring look any good to you?

I need your help on this :twirl:

thank you for your attention!

apart for the fact that it is seriously packed with dirt, I have difficulties recognizing whether the diamonds are modern brilliant or old european. any ideas?
the seller has inherited this ring and has absolutely no clue about jewellery.
