How do you determine size of side stones in eternity setting?

My, hopefully, soon to be fiance, has small fingers (around 4.5-4.75 ring size). She initially indicated a preference for the eternity setting (3 stone). The main stone I am going with is probably going to be around 2.1-2.3 carats. The band will be platinum.

She is about 4''11 and fairly petite (105-110 lbs).

So, I am wondering if this setting will look ginormous ...

What size side stones should I be considering ... is .5 to small for each side? Also, if I get an AGS0 main center stone, do I need to worry about the clarity/cut/color of the side diamonds as well (I am having enough trouble with the main diamond,

).

What about cathedral setting with channel set diamonds (princess or brilliant). Would this look sort of weird?

She sounds like a little fairy princess. Tiny little thing! That 2 carat is gonna look like a boulder on her! As for the size of stones...there will be pros to chime it. As small as her finger is...I wouldn''t go too large...as it will spread too far out and cover some of the neighboring fingers. But I wanted to make sure we all understand your descriptions clearer to help you better.

The eternity design...can encompass all different ones. But usually it means a ring that has diamonds that go all the way around the ring. One after the other. They can be channel set, or bezel set, or shared prong set, etc. But usually when one speaks of an eternity...it indicates a style...that is more than 3, 5 or 7 stone ring. Here on PS you will see a lot of shared prong sets. This makes the ring looks as if it is diamonds glued side by side. And go on FOR AN ETERNITY as it is a full circle.

Any other ring you can usually describe it as the stone count. Like 3 stone...5 stone...or even 3/4 stone set.

That being said, are you trying to create a three stone engagement ring with a large center stone and two smaller ones flanking it? Then you are thinking of adding additional smaller sized stones in the rings design alone the sides? And in your planning you are asking if you should channel set a cathedral? Again a Cathedral 3 stone?

I am still learning the jargon.

She wants a 3 stone setting then (or hinted at it). One center stone with 2 smaller stones flanking it. I would not add any stones add''l to it. I am just wondering if it is worth the money to buy the side stones since unless they are fairly large, I would think the 2+ stone in them middle would mask the side stones? Some have recommended .75 or higher for side stones -- but, that ring would be huge (I can''t picture it -- 2.2 center stone with .75 on each side - so, around a 3.7TCW)

I was thinking, if it might look too large, that I would do a center stone; but, the other stones would be channel set.

Also, how important is it to buy the wedding band now? I was going to get a wedding band with channel set stones ... hence, why I am beginning to wonder if this is getting to be overkill ... 3 stone setting and then channel set wedding band, or, go with channel stones in the engagement ring and the wedding band.

I have no idea what I am talking about in terms of setting ... I just hear cathedral a lot

The only pricescoper I know with 4.75 finger size with a 3 stone ring is San Diego Lady. She has a round brilliant centre stone (1.51ct) and sapphire side stones (1.06ct each).

I hope she won''t mind me showing you a picture of her ring so you can see how much it covers the finger. It might help you to decide what size side stones you want.....

A 2 carat center is pretty large already for such a small lady, BUT if she feels comfortable with it, then it is really up to her to get what she really wants. Putting side stones of 1/2 ct each will make the stones cover more than the top of the finger. It will look pretty large in the overall.

You might consider steeply angling side diamonds down the side of the ring. Instead of round side diamonds, maybe use pear shapes, or tapered baguettes side stones which would allow a narrower cross section and still give a lot of glamour to the sides of the ring. The side stones would not face directly upward, but face out somewhat to the sides, but not hidden between the fingers, either. The cathedral side of the upper portion of the shank would be a diamond on each side at about a 50-60 degree angle from the top stone.

The color should be within 1 grade of the main diamond and the fluorescene strength and color should be "none" or similar to the center''s UV fluorescence. The clarity can be a grade or even more lower than the center so long as the visual appeal is not lost and the cultural component is respected. Some cultures prize high clarity and I don''t want to mislead you. As far as cut grade goes, the center will be a very fine make, so the sides, if poorly cut would look dark or watery. Using lively stones is what is needed, but they don''t have to be super ideal cuts if budget is a consideration.
