How do you cope in the hot weather?

I am useless in the summer. The heat overwhelms me and makes me feel dizzy and sick. I wish I could stay inside but obviously that isn''t realistic.

Does anyone have any tips on dealing with the heat? How do you get by?

Wear light color clothing
Open toe shoes
Lots of cold water (if you are feeling dizzy, make sure you aren''t dehydrated!)
Stay out of the sun when it''s at its worst. For us 2-4pm is absolutely brutal. We avoid going out if at all possible.

Humid hot weather: A/C on in the car, hair completely pulled back and off my neck, light weight clothing in natural fabrics, as skimpy as possible while still staying decent.

Hot but dry: windows down in car, hair up, light colored cotton fabrics, covering my arms to prevent burn, but loose.

Both scenarios: lots of water, make sure I eat a lot of fruits and proteins so I don''t get dizzy, get out of the sun before I "can''t stand it anymore." When I see my kids getting sweaty, I make them play downstairs in the family room or garage since we don''t have central air, and half the downstairs is underground. Stays much cooler down there.

The water thing is so obvious yet I do forget to drink. I think I maybe have two or three cold drinks a day. I reckon dehydration must be part of it. How much is enough water though? One glass an hour.. two?

Ponytail and flip flops, tee shirts, shorts or dresses and skirts, lots of icy beverages, a/c (though I don''t always like it) and cold showers. Pool time if I have access to a pool.

I hate summer with a passion and try to stay indoors as much as possible. When I do my gardening, I always do it before noon and after 6pm.

I stay inside in the air conditioning!

I hate hot weather. Hate it! Anything over 80 degrees is way too hot for me, so once it hits 80 the a/c goes on and I spend little time outside. I''m just not a summer person. If I sweat just walking to my car, it''s way too hot.

The bunnies don''t handle heat well either, so they''re a good excuse to turn the a/c on as soon as the temp in the house goes above 80.

I''m loving today - it''s only in the low 70s and sunny. Perfect! I''m soaking it in because it''s going to be 85 tomorrow

There are many places I just could not live because of summer heat and humidity.

There are some disadvantages of living here in coastal Southern California (like high-density, cost and traffic) but the mild Mediterranean weather makes it all worth it.
We don't even have a heater or AC in our house.

I say this not to boast, but if it really is that intolerable for you perhaps consider moving to a better climate as a long term plan.

I don''t have a shower, only a bath so maybe I should go and dunk myself in there

I also don''t have aircon, plus the aircon in my car doesn''t work properly either!

I live in north east england and we don''t normally have such hot weather. The last few years it feels that the summers are getting hotter and hotter. I am just not built for such heat. Add to that the fact that I am overweight (so not happy to wear shorts) and we have a problem!

The lows here this week at night have been 81. I do my walks in the morning, and carry a bottle of ice water. I find I can walk as long as I am carrying the water. I had to start leaving my Ipod at home though, too much paraphernalia. We have steamy heat. When you step out, your sunglasses fog up. This is on the Georgia/Florida border. Nine months of the year, the weather is perfect here, but June, July and August are sultry, as my mother used to say. I keep being reminded of the movie, "The year of living Dangerously."

In NJ, so it can get hot, but worse than that its always so HUMID. Today is nice low humidity 84 - but the next 5 days are all going to be in UPPER 90s and very humid. Yuck. You just wilt outside.
Now I hate winter, hate it! But this kind of humidity is horrible. Im the kind of person that is cold in 70 degrees, but this humidity kills me. I drink a lot, ac or air moving is a must. Pool and ocean is great! lol

James is outside in his paddling pool with his sister. I am tempted to go and jump in with him! He is splashing the dog and she looks most offended.

Loose cotton tunics. Gatorade/powerade mixed with equal parts of water. If you are going to be in the sun, wear tunics that cover your arms. It will keep you cooler. No antipersperant!! Deoderant is ok. You are supposed to perspire. It cools you off. I think that having a reusable water bottle and making a habit of keeping it around makes me drink more water. If its already near me, I''m more likely to drink it.

I forgot to mention that if I have errands to run and it''s going to be hot, I try to get them all done before 10AM when it starts getting really hot. Yardwork needs to be finished before 9 am.

Drink tons and tons of water

I actually love the heat and humidity. I know, I''m weird. I can''t stand winter or being cold though, and I have dry skin so the hot humid weather alleviates all of my winter ailments!

I am terrible in the heat. I love the winter and dislike hot weather. I live in New England where summers are relatively mild and the heat still sometimes gets to me. Like Winks_Elf, if I have outdoor chores to do, they are done by 10. If all else fails, I go to the beach. I''m never hot on the beach--the breeze alone is usually enough to keep me cool.

I live in the midwest and it''s hot and humid most of the summer. I hate anything above 75 and humidity. I drink plenty of water, keep my hair up, run the A/C like crazy. I take my kids outside to play in the morning instead of the afternoon.

A/C, extra water intake and lots and lots of whining!

I don''t like it over 80 in my house, which is fine except for like 2-3 weeks a year. I don''t have air conditioning so I take lukewarm showers. When I get out, I feel so refreshed.

LOL, I used to do that when my kids were little. You can just soak your feet, that always cools me down. You can do it sitting on the edge of the tub or the pool.

Sweet tea! It''s the only way I survive these horrible Chicago summers.

I had to go to the main post office this morning. I was there at 9.15. I thought I was going to pass out with the heat and it was only 71 degrees! There was no breeze at all though, I can usually get by if there is a little air circulating.

I am extra good at whining so if that helps I am all for it

I realised that I only had one drink all day. Thats not enough and I need to make more effort.

I eat a ton of fruit
I drink a ton of water/fluid (water, cold green tea, juice)
I eat really light food, lots of cold food
Shorts/Capris
Tank tops/short sleeves
Open toed shoes
I swim in the afternoons if it doesn''t rain
walk and ride horses early early morning only
popsicles
I''ve been known to drench my hair mid day.... when I''m not working.

I get my hair cut shorter (I have very thick hair). Generally I am cold though so I kind of enjoy our short summers.

Oklahoma gets purt durn hot in the summer, and it''s plenty humid enough even if not quite as humid as some other places.

The summer of ''80, and the summer of ''98 - yikes - triple digits all summer long in ''80, and the heat started in May and didn''t break until mid-October in ''98.

Anyway, I''m a redhead and pretty much stay in. In late May I crawl under a rock, and don''t come out until late September. Of course, we have serious AC in these parts too, so any heat up is just more of what we already have and not something new. I feel sorry for people of cooler climates who are getting hammered with new heat. Misery...

a bottle of water to mist yourself and a hand held fan. Renders makeup useless of course.... but works :)

I love being warm but I am not a fan of humidity, as soon as it got a little warm here my DH turned on the ac and now here I sit at my computer with socks, pj pants, tshirt and a hoody on because I am so cold in my house, I was thinking about getting the laptop out because it keeps me warmer when it sits on my lap!

Well, I love air conditioning! It gets HOT where I live. The heat index was 107 last weekend. Other than that, I generally live in sundresses and light weight skirts- so much cooler than shorts IMO. Basically, I wait until fall and try to remember how cold I was in winter so I appreciate the heat.

Hydrate and hydrate. Cotton tops that breath, same for underwear... GOD if DF shows up I will have to smack him.

Sorry you don''t have AC. But the UK shouldn''t be sooo hot right now.

Fans would be a must..

Slice fruit and freeze it, makes for a healthy cool snack..

Take a cool bath and then go to bed... Any chance of putting an outdoor shower??
