Hi Ladies,

I have almost completed my engagement ring reset, and my next project is going to be a long term one.

So i guess i have a number if questions.

I am looking for a full eternity ring, size 8 - 8.5 finger.

How do i work our how many diamonds i need??? I will be buying them over time, and getting the ring made up at a later stage.

I am looking at .3 or .4 ct for each stone.

I have a 1.13ct solitaire engagement ring, and my existing eternity rings are channel set with round diamonds.

Should i stick with round, or can i look at emerald, asher, or princess cut???

Also what cut/clarity etc should i look for in each stone??

Thanks in advance for the help!

Have you tried on an eternity this large? Because it will be very thick between your fingers and possibly uncomfortable. It is really probably better to just save money and have your ring maker source matching stones at the time it is being made. But I would find one this size to try on if you already haven't. Most people make 5 stone rings with .3-.4 diamonds. I am assuming you mean for this to be a stand-alone ring? Because it really will not work with a 1 ct solitaire because the eternity will sit so much higher on the finger and the stones would probably ruin the prongs of the e-ring.

I agree with DS. That is a really uncomfortable eternity.

Hi diamondseeker2006 and Gypsy,

Thanks for your replies.

I will go through your points one by one diamondseeker2006.

Trying one on - i haven't tried one on, but yes it can be hard to tell from photos the size. For a full eternity what size stones would be a better option?? Also regarding the answers below, it could affect that.

I could go with a 5 stone ring, but hadn't looked at that option yet.

No, it won't be a stand alone ring, it will be worn with an engagement ring, 2.5mm band, and 2 plain wedding bands, each 2.5mm

The engagement ring reset is the solitaire in the middle, surrounded by a full circle of ten 10 pointers. So the underside of it will be fairly intricate.

Thanks

Are you planning on wearing all 5 rings on one finger. Earring, band, and 3 other bands?

Seriously, with an e-ring with a center 1 carat stone surrounded by 10 pointers, I do not see a large eternity working at all. If you also plan to wear two plain bands and want to add a diamond band, I think the only thing that would look right is to add a low set band with 10 pointers to match the size of the diamonds in your e-ring halo. Ten pointers is really as large as I usually like to see for a diamond band, because honestly, anything larger competes with the e-ring. And since your e-ring is going to be large and blingy anyway, I think it would be a mistake to wear a diamond band with larger than 10 pointers. I had a band with 10 pointers that I wore when I had a 1.6 ct diamond e-ring. Be sure to get one that is set low so it doesn't stick out higher than your plain bands.

With an engagement ring that's an average size so... .8-1.3 I wouldn't go any bigger than 10 pointers. And with a 1.4-2.0 I wouldn't really go bigger than 20 points MAXIMUM. But with a preference for 15 pointers or again, 10 pointers.

Do you have a Tiffany near you? Go try some on. They have a ton.

And finally... what size is your diamond and what is your ring size.

I recommend a 7 stone or a 5 stone as well. I myself have a preference for 7 stones.

You REALLY need to go try some bands on.

Where are you located?

It will be a gigantic eternity ring...

I see 1.13 center?

I'd go with 10 pointers max.

This is the band I recommend it comes in 1/2, 3/4 and full eternity:

Why? Because it is set low, and made to be worn with other rings.
They can make it for you with 10 pointers. Just ask for a quote. It won't be returnable though.

If you are planning to have kids though, I wouldn't go full eternity. Your finger size may fluctuate, sometimes by quite a bit, and a 1/2 eternity would be sizeable.

I wouldn't recommend that combination either. I'm posting a couple of pictures. The first is a 7mm sapphire in a halo with a .28ct 7 stone. I wouldn't wear them together, as the diamonds rub on the supports on the halo. The intent was to wear the big band alone, which I do. My 7 stone has 4mm stones, and is a size 7, and almost a half eternity, which is perfect coverage, IMHO.

The second is some research I did before starting the 7 stone project. Bottom left is 10pts, top left is 20pts, top right is 33pts and bottom right is 50pts. Originally I wanted 50 pointers, but there is no way, as it was way too big and bulky and I am way too active with my hands. The princess you see off to the side in the pictures is 1.51cts.

I recommend trying all of these things on before making any big purchases towards them. It saved me a lot of money and a lot of grief.

Hi Ladies, thanks for all the replies. I will go down through your posts one by one, and answer some of your questions. You all have given some great advice.

swingirl - I would plan on wearing 3-4 rings, e-ring, wedding ring or two, and the eternity ring. Although that might change once I see the e-ring reset. There may not be enough space.

Diamondseeker2006 - lovely photo. I take your point about the 10pointers, but the more I look at things, the more I think I might not fit a ring with larger diamonds on the finger, as the e-ring reset will be quite a large circle. If one even fits on that hand at all.

Gypsy - no Tiffanys near me unfortunately, living in Ireland, but I am going to so shopping around to have a look and try some on. My Diamind is 1.13 ct, and ring size 7.5-8. I am going to look at some 7 stone ones to.

Dancing fire - a Thanks!! I will be big, thinking now to big.

FrekeChild - your ring is beautiful, but I take your point about the size of the ring with another one beside it. The 7 stone gives great coverage. The photo of the ring with the 10 pointers is possibly the closest that will work with everything else. Especially as the new diamonds on my E-ring will be 10 pointers.

I think after everything I will be going back to the drawing board!!!
