This is the perfect thread at the perfect time...

I''ve been searching out setting styles and stone shapes for a couple of months now.

At first, I had to have a crisscut halo, but then realized that they were just so pricey because of the branding.

Then, I switched to coveting an EC halo, but read a variety of opinions that felt the halo clashed with the simplicity of the EC. So, then i thought i had it all sorted out -- an oval halo

. i felt it suited me, an oval cut diamond with tiny surrounding pave was my ''dream ring''

Unforunately, since my beloved BF has yet to find a permanent job since graduating in may (he''s trying ever so hard, just an oversaturated lawyer market) the building of our budget sort of grinded to a halt. ouch! I have been pretty disappointed by the resulting postponment, but i understand -- what can be done about it.

Anyway, things may have changed and changed a lot. Last night, I got a call from my mom and she told me that my grandma, who is the person most dear to me, very much would like me to have her diamond. now, like windowshopper (who''s post made me laugh out loud) i have never been interested in a RB -- it''s just not me. However, I love my grandma and the thought of wearing the diamond that belonged to her, well that is just so overwhelmingly sentimental and meaningful...plus, we definately have the budget for a beautiful setting if we didn''t have to worry about the diamond

I know very little about the diamond itself only that it is a RB, maybe about 1ct. i have to wonder what kind of cut it is because i think it has to be over 100 yrs old because i think it belonged to my grandpa''s mother???

right now, i''m trying to decide if i should scrap my ring designs and focus around a new design using my grandma''s ring or keep my own ring style and maybe make my grandma''s into a pendant (near and dear to my heart)?????

the more i think about it, the more touching the idea of wearing my grandma''s diamond, in my own ring, becomes.

thoughts, suggestions???
Well, if money is an issue right now, then I would go with your grandmother''s diamond.

Besides, you said the feeling is very touching for you. That way you could focus more on the setting.

I was proposed to with my husband''s great grandfather''s diamond. Even though it was small, I wore it very proudly. When I upgraded, I put that diamond in a pendant and wear it almost daily. My DH likes the fact that I still wear it even though I now have a bigger e-ring. I know it''s not exactly the same thing as having my grandmother''s diamond -- if I had that, I would probably never change it b/c she was so dear to me. I miss her so much.

i have gone back and forth also! i am getting SO frustrated with myself. I can only imagine my BF!

my mom''s was a RB. actually, all i''ve ever seen growing up was a RB. so that''s what i wanted. a RB solitaire. then i saw an asscher, and a cushion. wow! so then that''s what i wanted. an asscher solitaire, or a cushion solitaire. i went to WF, and tried on an asscher and RB. couldn''t decide. in the end, the ACA''s arrows won. Then i started thinking about an ACA with tapered baguets on the side. Then the other day at lunch my BF and I saw a lady with a three stone ring. we were blinded and hooked. Currently i am researching 3 stone rings- the ones where the stones are super close so that they look like one stone...but my main concern is finding a e-ring that allows the w-ring to sit flush!! is it possible?

good luck and let me know what you decide.

Might as well throw my two cents in. I really didn''t give it much thought at all. (Looking back I can''t believe how little thought I gave it!) The first day my fiance and I went looking, the jewelers would ask which shape I liked, and my first thought was, square or round, and I leaned toward square. But my fiance leaned toward round, and since it is the most brilliant, and since I am the world''s most indecisive person, I figured, he''s buying it, let him pick it. He picked a 1.09ct ideal cut RB, I SI1. He picked a beautiful diamond, so I can''t complain. I do like that it is classic and very sparkly!

However, since then I''ve seen so many beautiful shapes, and I must admit the uniqueness of them appeals to me. e.g. never even heard of Asscher cut until after I got my ring. Sometimes I do feel like the RB is boring, since it is so popular. But with all that sparkle it really can''t be considered boring, and it is such a classic. (And considering how indecisive I am, it''s kind of a good thing that I didn''t confuse myself even further by considering all those shapes!!!) I think my biggest problem was, I hated my setting, which I plan to change. For me, if I could start all over again, I would not really separate diamond shape from setting. I think some diamond shape/quality/setting look fabulous together, whereas that same shape diamond might not look great due to quality or setting. e.g. I always knew someone with EC, and it never impressed me that much. But now, out in public, or on here, for example, Tacori E-ring''s, I LOVE some EC''s. Likewise with so many diamonds. Sometimes I don''t like pears on the hand, and yet kittykat''s pear "upgrade" is gorgeous. So to me it totally depends. Sometimes I see two rings of essentially the same style and yet I like one and not the other; don''t always know why. And sort of like Window Shopper said, I would rather have a colored stone if a SMALL (e.g. less than 3/4 ct Round) diamond was my only option. Likewise what lawgirl said, " 2.4 carat solitare - looked good, but when I tried a 1.0 carat Emerald solitare it looked TINY on my 6.5 size finger." So it is so dependent on all the factors. I think I have to see the whole package, and for me I have to see it on my hand. Which is one of the things I too find frustrating - it''s hard to find a store which has a good variety of stones and settings to try on to really get a feel for it.

So, peonygirl, I feel for you!

And to lovelylulu, I''d go with grandma''s ring! For now. Like someone said, you can always upgrade it later.

Hi

I got a display ring from Alpha Supply Inc (link). It is item number G1849. Although it is a bit high and do not really look like a real ring, it gave me a really good idea what my diamond would look like in a setting. It was amazing how differently it reflected light when it was on my hand. The setting is pretty secure as well.

I started my diamond search looking for a princess. Everybody in our family has RB cut stones - some gorgeous and others not, except to their owners

, and I definitely have always been different.

The Tiffany's rectangular Lucida made me decide I wanted a rectangular stone.

I saw a few radiants, and really liked the shape but didn't care much for "busy-ness" of the stone itself - some call it crushed ice. I saw several of the cushions on PS and loved them. I went to a jewler and had a look at a few cushions and my mind was made up - I had to have one.

Now I own a rectangular cushion and can't wait to get it back from Dvatche!

I always thought I wanted a round tiffanys solitaire with a ruby and diamond wedding band. Well, once my bf and i started talking about rings I went to CD peacock on michigan ave and started trying things on. I fell in love with the ritani endless love and the antique feel of halos. I then decided that I wanted a halo but with a round ruby center (family tradition with rubies in rings). Learning about colored stones was quite a task, who knew a ruby would be as expensive as a diamond and much harder to find. When I saw my oval ruby I knew it was what I wanted (i had never even thought about an oval), it just spoke to me. I knew it wasnt perfect and wasnt what i had originally wanted but i just knew. I havent seen the ring yet, just the wax, but i knew. ANYWAY! Go try some rings on at a store you dont plan on purchasing from and hopefully, you will just know when you see it!

I wanted an EC or a pear, but my fiance liked rounds. I was just so excited to get engaged, I didn''t really pressure him except that I wanted to "approve" or select from whatever choices he gave me. We ended up getting a small .33 diamond in a e-ring/w-ring set, as was popular in 1989 when we got married. The center diamond was so small you couldn''t even make it out in our wedding photos of our hands (I''ve attached a picture to show it). A few months after the wedding, with my own money, I upgraded the diamond to a .57 (BIG improvement), which in a weird way, I consider the original diamond because I only had the first one for about 6 months. Anyway, I ended up with a pear, and I''m much happier with it than I was with the old ring, but I''m having trouble finding just the right setting for it. Rounds may be the most common shape, but they are popular for a reason -- they are versatile and they sparkle a lot.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. So many choices, only one wedding ring finger (sigh).
