How Connected are you?

So I have a Nook. Which I love and carry with me everywhere.

And a home laptop and a work laptop. So I most of the time I have a computer on or just a tap away from being on.

And last week we upgraded our phones, and I now have a smart phone. Which I've taken to like it's crack. I had been resisting the smart phone phenomenon, insisting that I don't need one... but OMG. It's such a stress REDUCER. If I am anxious about anything... a package delivery, an email, a call, a voicemail all I have to do is tap the screen and BAM! Instant control... and instant anxiety relief.

I just looked at my 'stash' though and realized just how plugged in I am. Almost all of my 'awake time' my time is alloted toward one of these three devices these days. It's kind of a scary realization about how dependant I'm becoming on these devices. Strange how insidious the creep is.

How connected are you? And does it ever kinda creep you out?

Ummm, very.

I have the Kindle for reading, and iPad for away-from-computer times, a smart phone for instant access, and we have a couple of laptops as well as a desk top. It's insane, so I'm right there with you.

I'm connected about the same as you Gypsy...I have a laptop that's always on at home. I have a Kindle which I love. And I've had a blackberry for ages. I'm about to become more connected as my company has gotten me a Sony Xperia X10, which is an Android phone. The Blackberry I pretty much only used for emails and texting. With the Android phone, it's a whole new ballgame and part of Sony's customization is to use this "timescape" feature which updates all the feeds from your social network sites. I plan to disable that feature, but still...the access is there.

Sad though - all this accessibility has made me hugely inaccessible by one main method - the plane old landline phone. Even cell phones, I don't often pick up.

ETA, and no, it doesn't creep me out. I generally ignore my phone when I'm off hours. I like to surf the web, so it's just a fun pastime since I don't watch TV.

I have a laptop, a kindle, and a Blackberry phone.

My laptop is on and around most of the time, especially now that I'm spending so much time writing. I use PS as my little writing breaks, so the amount of time I spend here is pretty much indicative of the amount of time I spend writing, which is a lot.
I don't use my kindle much, maybe a couple times a week.
I carry my Blackberry as a cell phone, but as I hate talking on the phone I rarely use it. I don't go on the Internet or use it to check my email much. I do like to take photos of the furbabies with it and send them to DH while he's out of the house. Oh, and I like the navigation on the phone, too. I use it when I'm driving somewhere new or unfamiliar.
I don't even bring my cell phone into work, and I rarely go on the Internet there, so when I'm working the only way I connect is with the regular old land line.

If you asked my loved ones, they'd tell you I'm not connected at all. I despise talking on the phone, and I respond to phone calls or emails on my schedule. It seems that most people believe I should be reachable every second of the day simply because I have a cell phone, but I refuse to be anything of the sort.

I have a laptop and a texting cell phone (no land line). My husband has a laptop too but it needs to be fixed. I use my laptop all the time and I do like to chat on the phone, but not for the same amount of time I used to talk. I text my husband and a few friends occasionally. There are times when I'd like a smart phone so I can check my e-mail and surf the web when I want, but I don't need one. As long as I have GPS in my phone, I'm good, and I can live without all the other bells and whistles.

My husband has a smart phone and he plays games on it and he texts me. He also checks his e-mail on it or looks things up online occasionally. He has a Blackberry for work but he only uses it for that purpose. Neither one of us has a Kindle, Nook, iPad, iPhone, iPod, or anything like that. We do watch a good amount of TV, mostly CNN, movies or shows from Netflix though. Maybe we rely on TV too much for entertainment, but we do like to read, go out, and do other things too, so I think it balances out somehow.

laptop and blackberry. i thought i was over-connected, but it seems compared to some other PSers, i'm not overly attached.

i make an effort to put the computer away when we need time together, or to leave the bberry upstairs or on silent, then we can have time disconnected for a bit. it does feel a little crazy some times to be constantly checking emails, etc.

I always have my phone w/me and it has texting and internet so I can access my email anywhere I am. We're thinking of getting an iPad, but I don't really want one. We have two computers at home which we recently upgraded and we also have THREE LCD monitors. My husband hooked two of the LCD monitors to our main computer so we can be on two websites at once. It is nuts and when people come over, they look at the set up like, "what the h*ll?" so THAT part creeps me out!

not that connected. I have my cell phone (which I have all data..so I'm always connected to my email) and have my home computer.

I'm looking into a tablet (holding off until spring when more are coming out)..but I also may get the new Sprint HTC EVOO. My husband has it and he LOVES it (more than the Iphone). He loves the android OS. I just have a reg. LG Rumor touch phone

I have an iphone with Mobile Me and my laptop at home. My home computer and work computer do not talk to each other. So while my personal stuff is portable, my professional stuff literally stays in my office.

I'm very very connected too. It definitely creeps me out. I know I'm young but my friends and I talk about how different things were back in high school when we didn't have Facebook or cell phones until we were in 12th grade. I remember first using a computer at the age of 13 or 14. While I know that a lot of people didn't start using those things until much later in life, it still boggles my mind when I see 6th graders with cell phones or my 3 year old nephew operating a computer.

I will admit that I am addict to these things now. I got a smart phone last year (I resisted for long too) but wow do I love it. I have an iPad with 3G, a laptop, desktop and an itouch. Its weird. I do enjoy being away from them from time to time and when I'm on vacation I really try to stay away from them all. By the end of vacation though, I am checking my email/other things like a mad man.

I've been better with my phone recently---once it dies I let it stay dead for hours on end when I'm spending time with SO.

Both my kids began using a computer at a young age and are fairly fluent on the basics. Both of them have installed video games and my son figured out how to connect Netflix and You Tube from the computer and stream it through our blue ray player because I don't have patience to mess around with that. lol It's great having a 10 year old to set that stuff up. Both kids also were given iPods and are learning how to download music to them. It's crazy that they have these at $250 a piece. Plus all their other electronics, computer, game consules, DSs, etc. I could pawn it all and buy a nice size diamond pendant. ;) lol

Iphone, Ipad and desktop. I have to have up to the minute connection.

I am very connected. I am not even embarrassed to admit that when I wake up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water or use the restroom, it also includes checking my e-mail on my phone (rarely responding). I spend, probably, 90% of my waking hours in front of a computer of some sort. Some of the time, it is for leisure. I read lots of blogs, articles online, and PS. More than anything, I am terrible at separating work and home. I don't mind, though. I'd rather work 12+ hours a day at 75% than 8 hours a day at 100%.

I have an iPhone, a laptop at home and at work (the home laptop is a tablet PC), a desktop at home and at work (both with dual monitors, MC--but the people I know think it is cool), and, as soon as the budget request gets approved, I will also have an iPad.

Now we're talking!!!! :naughty: :naughty: :naughty: :Up_to_something:

how connected am i (we?)?

We went to Tahiti for 10 days in may... and i brought my laptop. Sitting on the balcony of our overwater bungalow, with a laptop... my idea of paradise! :nono:

Didn't bring the laptop to Europe in Oct because we were limited in space, but we each purchased about 4 hrs of time at various internet cafes. :nono:

It's a sickness. i feel antsy when i dont have access.

Whenever we're on vacation we use the computers at the hotel and/or go to an internet cafe. I don't like being away from e-mail, etc. too long. It's funny, my friends used to laugh because I never felt the need for a cell phone. I resisted for years. I never had one until about 6 years ago or so. Now it's hard to imagine not having it.

I'm connected but in a kicking and screaming sort of way -- seeing the gadgets as a necessity rather than fun ways to be accessible. I don't like being easily accessible. I have hermit genes. What surprised me is how quickly I've come to depend on my Android phone. Loves it to pieces.

The only thing I have is my blackberry which I'm also addicted to. I like being connected. There are times though when I just need a break. So much time spent looking at computers or my phone and I start getting a major tension headache.

Hah! I hate being accessible to other people, but I want to be able to contact whomever/whatever I want whenever I want :halo:

I have a laptop and a phone from the Stone Age - no data plan, no texting, it just makes calls and is small and light enough to slip into the tiniest pocket - my only real requirement.

That's it.

I want a kindle, and when I get one I'll probably get the 3G so I can do email checks on the run. But I don't have facebook/myspace/twitter, I don't "follow" any websites other than PS and a couple of software blogs, so my needs are easily met.

unfortunately I'm always connected more than I'd like to be  I get work emails and personal emails through my phone ALL the time. I tried to let it go for a few months, but the option of being home more with my kids and running errands with them but still get some work done was ideal (though its getting tougher to do both :(sad ) I chose to have it come through.

Well, I have a:
desktop
laptop
iphone
ipad
ipod

pretty much always connected  ... and that doesn't even take into account facebook and texting. I get very annoyed when I look at my phone and I have 10 missed calls and numerous texts and then when I call whoever back they say, "Why didn't you answer your phone? What were you doing??" Jeez. lol

Though you are right that being able to check a movie time, package delivery, bank accounts.. google phone numbers and addresses on the go is a major stress reliever.

I am not as connected as some, 2 laptops and a desktop then my ipod, do not have a smartphone, I am not good with the small screens and am not a very good texter with the tiny keys. I do use my ipod to check if I am watching something on ebay or whatever and I do check email frequently and prefer that mode of communication, I will check that multi times a day (and ps  )

I'm very connected and not one bit ashamed of it! I embrace technology! I don't go anywhere without my Android phone and ipod, and I don't go on long trips without my laptop. I don't have an e-book reader, but that's probably because I don't really read.

In terms of connectivity, we're probably over connected. We each have an iPhone 4 and he has a Blackberry for work. I have a notebook and he has a macbook pro. We have an HP TouchSmart desktop that's sort of like our family hub, even our two year old's can use it because of the touch screen. Nate has an older imac desktop in his office that really needs to be replaced, which I think he's been planning to do. I have a Kindle that he got me for my birthday a few years ago, and for Christmas he got me an iPad. I casually mentioned it, so I was kind of surprised to unwrap it. I think he might take my Kindle now.

I find that even though I have all of these different items, I use the desktop for most of my internet surfing. And the twins occupy a lot of my time. There are many instances that I will log onto PS and leave the page setting because I like to watch them.

I'm pretty connected. I feel much, much more connected since I got a Droid phone (with the Android OS) in August. I now get work and personal emails on it, so I am constantly in the know about that stuff, which is both good and bad. I spend a lot of my workday out of my office, so it used to be that I couldn't check my work email for most of the day. Now that I get the emails on my phone, I can be reading about what's going on at the office while I'm in court, which is a time-saver but also a menace to working effectively.

I also have a Kindle, an iPod, and a laptop with a docking station, so I can use it as a desktop. DH offered to get me an iPad for Christmas, but I couldn't think of unique uses I might have for it . . . until my brother got one, and now I see how I might be able to fit one into my life.

When I'm on vacation, I take a lot of pleasure in disconnecting. I still read Kindle books for fun (who wants to cart 8 books to a Caribbean island?), but I don't use my phone, check email, or surf the Internet when I'm away. The peace that comes from a lack of electronic distractions is really satisfying, and I wish I could have the discipline to do it when I'm not in another country!

I only use my laptop.

I refuse to get a smartphone, and have recently upgraded to a new "regular" phone and avoided the Driod in the corner yelling my name! My main reasoning is that I refuse to pay that stupid $30 fee per month. We already pay it for my DH, and I don't want to give them any more of my money.
**I also had an HTC touch in 2008, before they charged the extra fee, and hated that I was constantly checking to see if I had an email, a text, anything... I didn't like the constant connection, and now that they charge for it, it is not something I am interested in.

As of the 25th of December, I now own the most expensive to-do list on the face of the planet. I got an Ipad for Chritmas, that I did not ask for, and do not need. I have downloaded one "app" and it is to keep track of my grocery list and day calendar.
I will not use it for books, I will not watch movies, and I will not listen to music. I have an I-touch that I only used for email access while planning my wedding. I have not touched it in over a year. I don't know what I am going to do with this thing.

I am pretty happy that I am most likely the least connected out of all of my friends.

Well, this thread promted me to check and see if my phone is a smart one - I don't even know if it is... Just found out it has a built in GPS. How in the world is a person suppose to keep track of all these features! Does anyone know how I make the GPS work? Do I shake the phone? Bang it against the table? Bang it against my head? Bang my head against the table? :errrr:

Okay, guess I'll go ask my 10-year-old ;)

Not very connected here. I have a personal laptop, a messaging phone, and that's it. I've been considering getting an electronic reading device but love actual books too much to invest in one right now...and I just don't need a smartphone although I had one for about a year recently before switching to a messaging phone. I check email and FB a few times a day, and that's about it. I don't have a job now (thankfully) where I need to be constantly connected to work, and other than work, no one really needs to connect with me super quickly. I love not being hyper connected. I've never been a huge proponent of having a cellphone, period...let alone all the other gadgets that allow people to contact me any time of day/night or gadgets that encourage rapid responses. I have to say that I enjoy a pretty peaceful life, and I like it that way.

My almost 3 year old niece received a cell phone, a digital camera, and her own computer for Christmas (she also has a 32" flat screen t.v. in her bedroom) and I was kind of appalled. The gifts came separately from her parents, her grandparents, and her great-grandmother. Not sure what sort of lifestyle they're encouraging with those sorts of things at such an early age, but I certainly wasn't about to voice my opinion. I guess the kid can come to my house for refuge when she figures out that she's developed issues over being too connected along about the time she turns, oh, 6. ::)

How screwed up is it that our nursing school REQUIRES us to have a smartphone?!?!?!?! So if you don't wanna pay the 30$ fee...tough luck says our school. So messed up.

I'm way connected. I have an android phone (samsung fascinate, which I LOVE!!) and a lap top. I use my computer a lot for school, and have been known to bring it to class to take notes. My phone is ALWAYS by my side, though on vibrate 90% of the time. It's just so convenient to be able to check the weather, movie times, gps directions, store hours, recipes while I'm in the grocery store.... I'm also obsessed with internet radio, so either my phone or computer is hooked up to the surround sound while I'm home. I    Pandora!
