how can a jeweler tell if a ring has been worn?

Hi, I recently purchased a 14k white gold band w .75 ct emerald cut solitaire. 4 days after the proposal, I found a better quality ring at .9 ct in 18k from a different jeweler for $100 more.

The place where I originally bought it from has a 30 day cash back return policy but only if the ring hasn't been worn. It has been 4 days since I gave her the ring and she has worn it all day every day. I cant see any way to identifiy if it has been worn, how can a jeweler tell? Am I stuck?

Any scratches or dings on the band??

not that I can see, i looked under a 4x glass. I thought there might be some way that they could tell, I'm just extremely paranoid that they won't take it back. I regret buying from them to begin with, i just didnt know what i was doing so i got ripped off

Even if it has been worn, they can buff it up and redip if required to remove just surface 'stuff'. If it's been gouged, that's a different kettle of fish.

Clean it first, just incase it is caked with hand lotion or something!

After 4 days - is it the design you don't like? would you trade for something different in that store? or do you totally want a different vendor in general? Is your fiance as unhappy as you are, with the ring?

We aren't unhappy with the ring, I just feel like I overpaid and the store I bought it from has an extremely limited selection of emerald cut diamonds and is generally overpriced from waht I have found since. I was in a rush and didnt know what i was doing (getting relocated and i have to be married for her to come with me). Now I have a better understanding of quality, price and size and I want to get the best I can for my $$

I'd try to return it for a full refund and start from scratch. I wouldn't even trade up with them (if that's what you plan on doing) and I really recommend checking out a few vendors here (can you post a picture of the ring and budget so we can see the style to help you find something else if that's the route you choose to go?). There are quite a few amazing vendors on here with great emerald cuts to choose from.

Check out videos on www.goodoldgold.com (I also recommend buying from there-they have a great selection of stone/settings/custom made pieces and great service).

Also check out www.jewelsbyericagrace.com and www.antiqueengagementrings.com (I did a quite search on the 2nd site and here are fully completed rings that pull up under emerald cut)

Good luck and congratulations on your engagement!

ETA: I see you listed the size of the stone. I found a nice stone on GOG consignment page for sale

ditto!

Agree with vintagelover - return it, walk away and start from scratch. Good links she has posted for you.
Where are you relocating to? A big city? in the US? most of the PS vendors will ship internationally, if need be.

I'll check these out, thanks so much! i,m moving from San Diego to Ontario, Canada. I purchased a VS1 .75 Ct, I ,good cut with 14k setting setting for $3100 + tax and I found a VVS2, H, good cut .90 Ct for $3375 w 14k setting $3475 for 18k setting (no tax). both are GIA certified

I moved from the USA to Ontario myself :)

I like it up here-what area are you going to be in? The Toronto area?

I highly recommend if you have a simple setting to get that stone and a similar setting shipped to you asap from GOG. They can easily get it done in a week or so and ship it to you. I do recommend coming up with the ring prior to moving since you'll have to deal with shipping it international which isn't a huge deal but sometimes can be a PITA. After you're up here there is a good local small jeweler in Barrie to do small repairs/sizing/etc that I can direct you to if this is the area you're going to be in :)

Return the ring and call Jonathan at GOG. You can't go wrong there!

BTW: You're going to be COLD compared to San Diego! I loved that part of the country (except for the amount of people/traffic). It does get warm up here though and Niagara falls isn't to far of a drive from Toronto if that's the area you are moving to. Of course if you're moving North to Thunder Bay that's a whole different story! LOL! At least you won't get sticker shock from housing prices where you're moving from though!

Thanks for the well-wishes and helpfulness everyone! Yeah, I'm really looking forward to the many positive changes. The cold doesn't really bother me too much, ive traveled to many below-freezing climates and done just fine. its nothing a jacket cant fix.

Don't get either one! Good cut is not good! You want GIA Excellent cut only (or AGS Ideal cut)! Take your time and get something that you can really be proud of!!!

whoa! careful there - it really does depend where you are going to be ending up!! ;)) I'd consider Niagara Falls/Niagara on the Lake as almost the Ontario "tropics" compared to other areas -

Hope your move goes smoothly, and the return of the ring - good luck on all counts!
