I''m so glad I found this place before I made a purchase. So down to the nitty gritty. My love is very petite, with small slendor hands, ring size 4.5. Do any of you half an opinion on stone size to match hand and finger size. I would like to get her the perfect ring she can wear all day every day. Not too flashy but enough to know she is special.

Thanks in Advance,
Daniel

I'd say 3/4 carat max but a very very good cut, clarity and color.

You asked for our opinion.
That's mine.

I''m have a size 4 and I love how 2 - 3 carats looks. Does that help??? No, really, I don''t think there''s a right or wrong answer to that question. Find a beautifully cut stone that fits into your budget and she''ll love it no matter what the size because it''s from you! Does she have a particular size in mind? Maybe you could pop into a jewelry store and try a few on for fun.

Boy, are YOU in the wrong place??!!

How big is too big?? The common answer around here is "It''s too big when she can''t lift her hand off the ground."

What does she do (career wise) and has she opinions on shapes? I might take her to see and try on various things, so you know where her head is...

PS Aldjeway...is that signature on your posts from Bill Engvall''s routine? I just heard some of the Here''s your sign stuff on Blue Collar Comedy on the satellite and it was making me crack up. He is a riot, never really heard him in action before!

Hah, good luck. Ok, well, I'm 4 1/4, and I think .7 is my minimum (mathematically determined...) and .75 is a good size, up to 1.5

i think it has to do with her and her lifestyle, personality, etc. what do her friends or coworkers around her wear?

some gals would think that .5c is fine, others may say .75c is fine, others may say 1c is fine, others could say 1.5 or 2c!

i would say that i think 1c is a great size on a size 4 finger...it would be noticeable but not too big.

but personally, if i had a size 4 finger...i''d still proudly wear my 2.3c (and it''d look more like a 3c!! hehee)...i love size!!

I''d take her ring shopping to see what she is comfortable with. What shape looks good on her hand, etc.. Some stones are smaller in size for their carat weight etc... What are her friends wearing, what is her lifestyle. Does she work with her hands, keep that in mind when considering the setting. Not an easy question to answer. HTH, good luck!!

Great comments...make me laugh even. I can just imagine a rock the size of her head dragging on the ground because its too heavy to lift. Seriuosly though:

She works at a hospital in Mexico.

To me, there are two ways of going about it. One is to get a sizeable diamond, put it in a Tiffany repro, a Scott Kay, or Ritani kind of thing. The other way is to go really small, like .3-.4 diamond, and put it in a Niwaka style setting. Then the question is, how small is too small? Different looks, I like both. One is decidedly the norm, the other is very cute.

Hi there, As you can see I'm sure you'll find a variety of answers here in that many people here looove their big rings. Be happy you are blessed with a girl friend with small fingers. I am 5'3 and a size 4.5, and currently my engagement ring is a .74 in a delicate setting. I think I would be fine from a .40-1.6 on my hand. I love the fact that my .74 looks very respectable on my small hand!! It's a blessing.
What does she like?? Is she a really active person, what type of jewelry does she currently wear? Has she tried on rings and said that certain sizes were too big? Either way, I'd stay away from thick settings and really tall settings, they look better on taller fingers and bigger hands. Also, if she works in a hospital, she might want a lower setting in order to work with patients better, put on plastic gloves, etc. I think you'd be pretty safe in the .7-1.1 range, unless she has told you otherwise.

all day every day? like doing housework and everything? I''d say 2-2.5 carats though someone else I''m sure will say 6! LMAO!!

Honestly? I''d get her a 1/2 carat e-ring and surprise her with something for her right hand that''s huge that she can wear for special occasions... like for your 1st anniversary or something ;)

Do you both live there? I would think she would be more comfortable with something around one carat in a simple setting. As stated, you can always buy other bling gifts, but due to the nature of her work, and the setting, I think the one carat is sizeable on her tiny finger and yet not too ostentatious for all the people she will likely encounter. Is she a doctor or nurse, or in administration? The type of stuff she does on a daily basis might also help determine what makes the most sense! But most important, take her to see shapes, settings, metal colors, etc...so you have a great framework! Good luck in your search!

No such thing as too big IMO!

I would think spring for a full carat, maybe a bit more if you want. It seems this is a very popular size for some girls, hitting that carat mark can be important to some, also not too big but a great size, noticeable but easy to wear. My 2c.

Welcome to PS, but regarding the too big question, Alj was right when she said you were asking in the wrong place!!

If she works in Mexico, in a hospital I would take her job/lifestyle into consideration moreso than her finger size. High-set rings in hospitals often get caught on gloves...or is that a myth?

I had a .5c in a rural part of the US and often turned the stone inward to my palm or left the ring at home due to my job. In my line of work it was considered impolite to wear fancy clothes or jewellery because it might make clients uncomfortable.

I would say the setting is the bigger concern as well. For a hospital job where you could potentially get your hands/prongs caught on all kinds of things and a large stone could pop right through a glove, I would go with a low profile setting with a 0.75-1 ct stone.

Daniel, asking us is like asking guys when are a woman''s breasts too big. You''ll get varying answers, but if you post the question on a We Love Big Boobs forum, well, just brace yourself

I agree that if you can take her shopping, it would be much easier to see what size lookes best. But if it's to be a surprise, I would say .75-1.0. I'm one of the few around here who's not into size, I wear a 6 1/4 and fairly recently bought a 1.40 round. I think it looks very proportional.

I also agree that given her job, you want a low setting so gloves will slip on easily. I wear a D'Vatche X-Prong setting, which is fairly low and would definitely work with the gloves (I've worn them before). If you type in low settings in the search box, you should get some info that might help.

Good luck!

I''d say .80-.85 is the way to go. It definitely is not small, yet not outrageously big if she works in a hospital. I am assuming you''re looking for a round.

SHe may like a 1 carat.......
I have a 2.25 marquise ..and I think it is too small......I need bigger :)

Purchase from a place that has a sweet trade up policy. That way, you can decide in a few years what if anything you want to change. I actually traded down in size over the years. Got tired of turning the thing inward to hide while with clients who did not sport same thing. I would also think about the setting being flush with the ring--health comes first and you don''t want the risk of glove punctures (coming from someone who used to work in a medical setting). If she is not involved directly with patient care, then that''s another matter...

If she is at a hosptial, I would not go bigger than 1ct. I think 1ct would look stunning on her size hand.

Is she working with folks who have very little in the way of income? If so, I would not go larger than .75ct. If she is working in a more middle class or area that is not financially strapped I think 1ct is fine.

Another alternative is get her a channel set eternity band as an engagement ring. It would not get caught in her gloves. It oozes elegance, but no need to worry about it getting in her way. Then when you get married, she can get a plain band and wear the two together. Or maybe a second eternity band but with colorerd stones like sapphire or ruby and she can wear them together when she wants a bolder look. And wear just one to work if she wants to tone it down. Just an idea :)

I got my channel set eterntiy band from facets.com. I can''t say enough about what great quality it is and how pretty it is. They were amazing to work with as well.

Good luck to you!

Hi Daniel, I''m a size 4 ring, and my opinion (for what it''s worth) is that there is no way a 1 carat round that is in a low setting can be too big. It will look fantastic on her hand, and the low setting will enable her to wear gloves and do what she needs to do without a problem (even a .5 carat that is set high would get in the way I think).

LOL...Yeah, definitely in the wrong place!
I say maybe a 3 ct would be too big. A 2.5 JUST RIGHT! LOL

I say get her a beautiful one carat. It will have the wow factor (she can brag to her friends that it is a carat), and you are lucky that her hands are small, because it will look nice and big, and perfect!

You haven''t mentioned your budget.

Also another approach that appeals to some people is get very high clarity and color for the budget when there are reasons to keep the size smaller.
She will know how rare and special it is, while it is not so large as to make her self-conscious.

I agree with a lot of the folks picking between .80 to 1ct. I have MUCH larger fingers than your lady.....I have a size 7 finger. I have a .83ct stone. My friend who has small fingers, probably about the size of your lady wears a .50ct and I don''t think hers looks that much smaller than mine. The reason I said up to 1ct is because of the job you mentioned she has. Honestly it''s all about personal tastes. There are people with small fingers that i''m sure would love to wear a large carat diamonds. What would also really help is what Kenny asked. Do you have a certain budget you need to stick to on this? Any type of setting style you think she might prefer? Are you looking for a plain solitaure setting? Or something with stones? or engraving?

i agree a simple low setting is best, or she may not even want to wear the ring in the hospital, there are some gals here who have rings who don''t wear them while working in the hospitals. or maybe she will just want to wear a flattish wedding band while working in the hospital or something. if she likes unusual or elaborate settings then i would definitely consider if she is going to wear it in the hospital or not.
