Hi I was wondering how big you thought this centre diamond looked. I can't make up my mind if it needs to be bigger.

Thanks for your help, I know my GF won't change it once I give it to her...

I'm not a good guesser but this website might help you tell how it will look on her...

It's lovely. Congratulations!

Is the question regarding:
  • the relative size of the stone to the width of the band?
  • the relative size of the stone to her finger (hard to know!) or
  • the absolute size of the stone regardless?
Proportions are key! A smaller stone can look better than a bigger one if its size better complements the band and finger.

It's a pretty ring! I like the channel setting on the band. :wavey:

Very pretty. Looks about a carat

I'm bad at this, but I'd say .85 to 1 carat? It is a beautiful ring!

Under a ct but more than .75

Three-quarters of a carat, is my best guess. Nice setting!

I think it's pretty but the band seems to be a bit wide, which may have an effect on how big the diamond looks. If the band is about 3 mm, I'm going with the size being like a 1.25 to 1.5. It looks like a nice sized diamond.

ETA: my hubby says it looks like a 2.3 carat at least, judging by the size of your finger. He says it looks huge! And I am size impaired. I actually thought the Eiffel tower in Paris was the same size as the one in Vegas--and I've seen both in person SEVERAL times!

Well I'm 6 4" so my pinky is the same size as her ring finger (Size 6)

Just after how big the stone looks in those pictures regardless....

Thanks for your help, It's a 3x GIA Eye clean I Colour and you can see that blue florescence.

You're right the band is 2.7mm, Might just be the photo as the band looks way thicker in that photo than in person. I'm using a DSLR with Macro lens, I'll take one with my phone... But it's not anywhere near your Husbands guess but I do like his optimism!

Since no one else seems to be playing, can you indulge those of us who did by telling us the carat size?

.75

.75

I was going to guess 1.2 but I'm never good at this!

1.23

The finger size makes a huge difference the stone on a large finger could be a .80 but on a small finger a 1.50. On a size 6.00 I'd guess around 1.10 to 1.30 carats.

I think it is .60 so who is correct

I would say it looks just under 1ct. So who was the closest?

About a carat?

.85 to just under a carat?

Sorry Guys,

It's a 0.95 with the cut around 6.4mm x 6.4mm so i was hoping most would think it was a full carat.

Since a lot of you with lots of experience said 0.75 I think I will go bigger. I could have saved lots of money with a 0.75!

Thanks for you help guys, i'll keep you updated.

No. Do not take this as an indictment on your stone. the fact is its very difficult from one picture on a pinky to tell the size. As many said before they voted, it was a mere guess.

Spend more if you're comfortable but dont spend more because a few people can't guess the size. They Never will be able to, so spend what you're comfortable spending and don't focus so much on what other people think. Especially when honestly, these questions always go the same way- some guess over, some under.

Niel is right. The fact that it is a 0.95 instead of a full carat means you are saving some $$$. If this is what you are comfortable with and you have gone to all this effort then I am sure that any girl would be happy to receive this. Don't worry about what other people think, what matters is what you and your fiancee-to-be think ;)

It's a beautiful ring and I think your girlfriend will be thrilled with it. Like Niel said it's really difficult to guess carat weight based on a photo, especially on a man's pinky and especially if you do not know the ring size and mm size of the shank. No matter how much you spend, there will always be people guessing over or under. My guess would have been 1 ct, but again, it's only a guess. What matters most it that she loves it and that it looks well on her hand.

To me a .95 is a perfect size. You get the visual look of a 1 carat and the price break from it actually being under the 1 carat mark. I would keep it if I was you. The ring is gorgeous.

I think .95 is a great size! Many here choose settings with a 1.8-2mm shank because a wider shank does tend to make a diamond look a little smaller. You might want to consider changing to a 2mm shank on the ring unless she picked out this particular setting.

+1. I hope OP comes back to read all of this valuable advice!

I think I'd personally keep the .95. It's a great size, and 6.4 x 6.4 is virtually indistinguishable from a one carat in real life - and real life is what you care about, right?

It's too difficult to tell in a still picture like this, with no frame of reference - and we can't tell how high or low the stone is set from the band, which greatly affects how it's size looks in pictures. That accounts for a bunch of the variations too.

.95 is a great mark to hit. Really impressed you hit it actually. Those stones aren't easy to find.

what size is the ring? how wide is the band?

I'd keep the stone and maybe find a narrower band, the thick channel band is what's making the stone look smaller.

She is a beaut, it's just the camera angle that's making the ring look wide it's 2.5mm...
