Hi everyone. I have committed to a loose diamond (30 days money back guarantee), see below for specs. Now, I do think the price is alittle higher than others I have researched on the internet.

7.57 - 7.59 x 4.55 mm
AGS Ideal 0
Polish ideal
Symmetry ideal
Proportions ideal
color: G
clarity: SI1 (inclusions can be hidden by a prong, nothing on table)
1.583 carats
Table: 57%
Depth: 60%
Pav Angle: 40.7
Crown Angle: 34.1
Girdle: 0.9% to 1.6% faceted
Culet: none
Price: $13,000

What do you all think? I do have a trade-in diamond (1 carat, SI1, I color, round Class 2B cut, inclusions mostly on crown and pavilion and no certification papers) that they quoted me $4,100 (bought it 8 years ago for $4,700 so I think it is not a bad trade in value). Overall for the 1.58 carat triple ideal: $13,000 - $4,100 = $8,900.

Should I go with it?

thanks,

Y

The specs look good. The spread is larger than any other comparable diamonds out there -- I'm not sure why -- it could just be good proportions. If nothing is wrong, that's a good thing -- the stone will look larger. The HCA gives it a .8 and Ex across the board. That's very good.

The net price you are talking about is competitive. There are other stones in that range or but most are slightly larger. If you look at just the ideal and ex/ex stones, you are actually getting a trade in price of $1000 - $1500 compared to other well priced stones. This is like trading in a car. You need to separate the two values to determine if you think you are getting a fair deal. It's easy to give you a good price on your trade-n if you keep the new stone's price inflated.

Bottom line...decide if you love this stone. It's probably not a bad deal. Do not delude yourself. You are not going to get close to your purchase price on your original stone by itself. Diamonds just don't have a big retail resale value, and $1000 - $1500 may not be far off the mark. (Do some searches on selling a stone here. I've never done it, but it's tough get 50% of your purchase price.) Just finding someone who will take an uncertified stone in trade is not easy.

Check to see if any of the inclusions break the surface. Look at the stone with an idealscope if they or you have one. It looks like a nice stone, and a reasonable deal at least if not better. (I'm not a price expert -- I can only compare them to what I see offered. You can do that also by running some searches above on the search tab and seeing what the comps are.)

Good luck!

Thanks. After thinking through it, rather than go through the headache of certifying the old diamond, looking for buyers, yadda yadda... I should just settle with the overall $$$ trade in numbers since I am so excited about the 1.58 ideal diamond.

I will post pictures and will have the new diamond ring appraised. Made an appointment to go see Martin Fuller in Virginia. Recommendations/inputs? Cost is pretty steep and he charges by the hour.

Hi I was reading your post and was curious to know your diamond vnedor. I'm trying to do a trade-in with a diamond myself without any luck....

THanks
