Hello, I am new to the site but had a question regarding my engagement ring. I got a upgrade and new head for the stone and now realize that the diamond setter did a poor job with my setting. It appears that 3 of the 6 prongs are of the hooked shape and the seats of the prong is cut to much. Is it possible to just fix the hooked aspect of the prong without getting a new head setting made? I waited so long for this new design and am so disappointed I dont even want to go back to my private jeweler. I rather just pay and have it fixed the best it can. The stones pretty secure but its the fact that its incorrectly set that is bothering me.

please see attached photo.
any advice from jewelers and professionals welcomed ! thanks.

Hi Rawcat- welcome to PS.
The photo is a cool silhouette- but it's a bit hard to see details...
Still, it looks like a "die struck" head.
They tend to have larger prongs- and the way it's set looks pretty common to me.
If the stone is very secure - does not twist in the setting- another test is the "tap test" . If a stone is loose yiu can hear it.
If the stone is not moving, it might not be worth it to try and fix. Sometimes that type of prong holds the diamond in a way that allows some daylight to get through.
Of course showing it to a good jeweler you trust can't hurt..... no one can really give a well advised opinion based on that photo.

Thanks for your response, you are right the jeweler did say it was die stuck. You are also right about the photo not being very detailed, I will upload a better one so that people can see clearly. It does not turn at all and is pretty quiet when I do the tap test. I was just worried because I read about poorly made prongs and having them hooked at the top if the table will create opportunities for it to snap, this is a platinum ring and head so I am hoping that wear and tear will take a longer time.

but if anyone can answer the question of if hooked prong can be straightened out or fixed Id like to know.
thanks alot

Honestly, not a single one of the vendors I've ever worked with/seen pieces from makes "perfect" prongs/prongseats. Perfectly seated prongs are "nice to imagine but not necessary" in my book - as long as the stone isn't moving and the prongtips touch the surface of the stone so they don't catch on stuff.

Hi, rawcat! Just wondering what you're thinking now that you've received some opinions and advice? Beautiful profile shot of your rings! Would love to see more pics! :)

A little different with the "fold-over" but the notched seat looks fine.

I can certainly see the poor setting job clearly in the first photo. No question that it looks like a non-professional did the setting. Truthfully, such work is not all that uncommon and the diamond may be securely set, but it is not even "good" setting. When you see a diamond which is seated properly in the prongs, you can readily understand why it is a better situation.

Here is a phot from my phone of the rings in general. It is true, I feel like it was a crappy job on the prongs and dont understand how anyone calling themselves a jeweler can leave such gaps between the stone/table and metal. I just wnt to know if it is fixable in any way - at least to have the Hooked aspect pushed down more so the platinum touches the diamond.

Thank you for the responses

Your set is beautiful! Did the same person who made your settings also set your center stone? What do you think about the quality of the rings in general as well as the prongs on your side stones?

Yes same person, the diamonds have great brilliance and fire, I am happy with the set over all. I fin the more educated I get the more I scrutinize the rings lol
I love them and my husband does too
The centre stone is 1.52 ct, F color and is a Si1 in clarity
I belive it is a excellent cut with very good symmetry and polish

I would talk to Wink (High Performance Diamonds) or Brian Gavin to see if they can clean that up for you. BG did a nice job on one of my rings that has a Stuller head. The jeweler who set the stone was sloppy, lol. BG put some nice claw prongs on it.
