Holloway Cut Adviser tends to score Blue Nile Signature low???

The Holloway Cut Adviser tends to score BN''s IDEAL SIGANTURE rounds very good (LOWER than excellent). Yet i found a AGSL IDEAL on BN that scored Excellent in all catagories???


Any feedback?... first and only time!!!!

i think i am missing the point. the HCA doesnt care who sells the diamond, it only looks at the angles and proportions. Its not that the HCA doesnt like blue nile, maybe blue nile just sells sub-prime diamonds. not bad diamonds mind you, just not as good as they could be.

If I were you, I'd save yourself some money and shop around. I think you can find stones for less elsewhere that are of better quality. You might be able to go down clarity grades as well to save money. I have a G SI2 pendant and I can't see any of it's inclusions without any sort of high magnification.

As to your question, we can''t tell without the proportions of each diamond why the HCA is not giving the best score, you would need to post each diamond''s numbers for us to see.

Hi James.

AGS and BN do not use the same definitions of ‘Ideal’. AGS’s is considerably narrower. HCA doesn’t use the term at all. AGS-0’s tend to score well on the HCA. Some others score well while some do not. Who sells the stone and what lab graded it are not variables considered in the HCA.

Are you perhaps referring to the spread grade? Most times a well cut stone will only receive very good at best. The HCA like stones on the shallow side, which this one is, (but not too) and that''s why it got an EX. If in fact you are talking about the fact that it got all EX''s, with emphasis on the spread grade, that''s why.


My stone faces up just as it should, yet only gets a VG also.

I purchased a Blue Nile Signature Ideal diamond and rated it using HCA. It scored a 0.9. It did only recieve a VG on spread, but like Ellen said it faces up appropriately for its weight.

So "spread" has more to do with length from end point to table..... i assumes it had to do with table width.

I cannot find a better price..... local shops are not giving what BN is for the same price.

This was the first diamond that i found that scored "excellent" on HCA.....

No, spread is talking about the diameter (measured from one side of the girdle to the other). So if a 1 ct. stone measures 6.5 x 6.54, that is the diameter. Stones that are very deep may be less in diameter (or spread), and shallow stones may have a greater than average spread. Thick girdles can also hide weight and affect spread.

Under resources, there are many vendors listed who carry ideal cut diamonds.
