What is the purpose of the hole in the ring above the finger, underneath the diamond ? Is it crucial to getting a good sparkle ?
Is the following correct ?

I have been discussing your ring with the diamond people and a problem has
arisen. Basically, to fill in the hole at the bottom of the basket would be
the worst thing we could do to a diamond ring.

When a diamond has equal proportions and symmetry (as in the Asscher cut),
light is reflected from each facet internally – giving a display of
brilliance and ‘fire’. The hole at the base is how the light can reflect
back up through the diamond, giving the stone its brilliance. If the hole
were to be filled in the light would enter the stone and be lost, with
nothing but metal to reflect off. The stone would look dark and ''dead'' with
no light reflecting out of it.

The diamond dealers say they are not really prepared to do this as it would
be detrimental to the the stone and would ruin the ring, especially with
such a good quality diamond.

I think I could persuade them to do it if you really did want the hole
filled in, but I would strongly advise you speak to your girlfriend about
reconsidering.

Thanks in advance for any advice !!!

That hole has nothing to do with the diamond sparkle. Its a way for us to measure
the depth of a diamond with our instruments. If you think about it your finger covers the hole when you wear the ring. The sparkle comes within the diamond not what its
mounted in.

Getting an accurate depth on the diamond when mounted, we can determine the
weight of a diamond. We use this instrument to do so.

Hand on a minute, though. You DO need that hole so you can clean the bottom of the stone. Otherwise it gets all gunked up and you lose the sparkle. Just ask Diamond Angel--she had a stone set without the hole and it drove her crazy.

Geez. Brilliance is all about light reflecting back through the *top* of the diamond. The bottom isn't going to make a whit of difference.

What style is the head? Glitterata could be correct. If it's not a bezel setting you need some way to get to the bottom for cleaning.
