What is the purpose of the hole in the ring above the finger, underneath the diamond ? Is it crucial to getting a good sparkle ?
Is the following correct ?
I have been discussing your ring with the diamond people and a problem has
arisen. Basically, to fill in the hole at the bottom of the basket would be
the worst thing we could do to a diamond ring.
When a diamond has equal proportions and symmetry (as in the Asscher cut),
light is reflected from each facet internally – giving a display of
brilliance and ‘fire’. The hole at the base is how the light can reflect
back up through the diamond, giving the stone its brilliance. If the hole
were to be filled in the light would enter the stone and be lost, with
nothing but metal to reflect off. The stone would look dark and ''dead'' with
no light reflecting out of it.
The diamond dealers say they are not really prepared to do this as it would
be detrimental to the the stone and would ruin the ring, especially with
such a good quality diamond.
I think I could persuade them to do it if you really did want the hole
filled in, but I would strongly advise you speak to your girlfriend about
reconsidering.
Thanks in advance for any advice !!!
