So Wednesday I had an interview that I think I have a really good chance at getting, but then yesterday our oh so popular governor said there was a hiring freeze for the state. I was just reading more about it and the article says that it goes into effect today. I''m absolutely terrified that I''ll have to stay at my current job. For the past week almost every night I''ve cried because I dread work that much and last night I didn''t cry because I was optimistic but I just can''t handle being there anymore. I''m just really scared that I''ll have to be there for awhile.

Unfortunately, hiring freezes have become more and more common as our economy bellies up.

My husband works for BoA, which had a hiring freeze just last year. They did this because, rather than letting anyone go, they just stopped hiring. It helped people who worked for BoA keep their job which was really important, and it all boils down to a seniority thing.

I would be thankful at this point that you have a job in our poor working climate, and continue to send out resumes and feelers. Freezes don''t last forever so stay optimistic that in the end of the Government reorganization the position will still be available to be filled, you can always resubmit a resume if you''re not hired on this go-round. And consider your blessings too...better you find out now while you''re still making money and gainfully employeed (even if you dislike your job) as opposed to starting a new job and being let go almost immediately and going broke trying to simply stay afloat.

((hugs))

Ditto. It''s "make lemonade" time.

We''ve been subject to a hiring freeze since the beginning of this year -- which is nothing new. In my many years in government service, I think we''ve been under a hiring freeze almost as long as we''ve been without.

Generally a hiring freeze means an agency or department can''t add staff. Generally, movement within the agency is still allowed. There may be some limitations (to prevent unpopular programs from being depleted) but if high priority programs lose staff, they''ll find a way to fill those vacancies from within if necessary. It''s worth checking out whether moving within your department is an option.

The other option is to make lemonade -- seriously. Please don''t take this the wrong way, because I don''t know anything about your situation or what you''ve done to try to improve it. But... maybe you can use this time to hone or learn some new skill, improve your communications with co-workers or supervisors, etc. People who perservere, do a good job, and have a positive attitude do get noticed, especially when everyone around them is busy kvetching.

Good luck to you!

I totally understand how you''re feeling, my last job was like that too, it was just so horrible that I would come home crying about it, I was lucky enough to find a new job before hiring freezes started, and I hope you will find something better too. Lots of luck.

On the bright side at least you have a job.
A lot of people are not that lucky.
A job you hate is still better than living in a cardboard box.

Thanks, I appreciate the positive thoughts and all. Initially I was happy that I have a job in today''s economy, but I feel like nobody I work with feels that way. I have plenty of things in my life that could bring me down and make me an unhappy person, but I really don''t need my job to be the one thing in my life that does do that to me. So I just don''t know how to be unhappy and it scares me to think that I would have to be this way for awhile.
Oh and I can''t actually apply for any positions that are available with my employer because I just started this position in November and it''s required that you be in your current position for one year before they let you transfer. I would like to keep my benefits, but I just can''t handle it.

Hi Pink,
Just making sure, since your second post made me think you are working for a company and not the govt. I''m sure you know that the hiring freeze is only on state government jobs; and that quite frankly if you are for example a Special Ed teacher, or an OSHA evaluator and your state needs to hire in order to stay compliant with federal laws, you could still get a job. State hiring freezes in fact do not apply to state contractors or grant funded positions or even federally funded positions; I bet you already knew this, but just wanted to put it out there.

Good to hear that you don''t know how to be unhappy, you will go far with that positive outlook.
