First of all I'm new here so it's nice to meet everyone. I've been doing my homework on the these forums and I've been learning a lot.I wanted to know what you guys think of this diamond. It's an EGL 1.7ct princess cut. D/SI2 measuring 6.41 - 6.07 x 4.69. Table 74% with a depth of 76.5%. Excellent Polish and Excellent symmetry. I've already put a down payment on it but I can always change my mind for it isn't fully paid off yet. Total is $5000 tax and shipping included. Am I getting a good deal or is something wrong here??

Is it EGL USA or some other EGL? The only EGL I would consider is EGL USA and even then, would want professional verification that it is indeed a true D SI2.

Secondly, I don't like how the stone isn't a perfect square. The ratio should be as close to 1:1 as possible.

Thirdly, I do not know the light performance of the diamond so for princess cuts, I would stick with AGL where the grading isn't only accurate but gives you the cut quality.

Chrono, I believe it is EGL Israel.

don't look square to me... :knockout:

1.7ct D stone for $5K? There has to be something off here. I'd be suspicious. Or is it 1.07ct maybe?

Yeah I've contacted the seller and it is EGL Israel. Another reason for the price is that you can tell the ratio of the diamond is not perfectly square. The seller told me the diamond is eye clean for she looked at it herself. I brought up the issue to my girlfriend regarding the shape and she doesn't mind if the square isn't perfect. Since the cert is EGL Israel, even if the color is 3 to 4 grades off it will still be near colorless since it was graded a D. With all of these factors (EGL Israel, and the ratio of the diamond), it explains the low price tag of $5000 for a 1.7ct princess cut. The diamond does have a 30 return policy so I think I'm going to go through with it. My girlfriend would rather have a 1.7ct EGL diamond than a 1.3ct GIA graded diamond with better quality. Go figure. Still, $5000 for a 1.7ct is pretty cheap and If I don't like it I'll just return it within the 30 day return policy. Thanks everyone for your opinions.

I would get it appraised loose, not set. EGL Israel is considered very loose and I clarity diamonds can have issues. It is also THE cheapest stone in its category on the Pricescope database.... be careful. Just because it is rectangular, that is NOT the reason why it is cheap.

Maybe send it to Neil Beaty, he is very nice and a good appraiser. Tell him you want a pre-purchase appraisal.

I just did a search on our leading business-to-business supply site. For $4,500-5,500 the only princess cuts offered in the 1.60-1.80 carat range with GIA reports are L in color, ranging from VS2-SI2 in clarity. These are wholesale listings, only accessible to verified trade members. It speaks volumes about the "likelihood" of a true D (or EFGHIJ) color being offered to you at such pricing.

Don't let the paper blind you. Good advice has been offered here. I also suggest reading the thread Gypsy linked. If you decide this "deal" is too tempting to overlook I hope you take the advice of sending the diamond to a true independent - like Neil Beaty - for a pre-purchase evaluation. It may be the best (small) spend you make.

Otherwise I fear we may be hearing from you again in a few weeks, saying "I wish I'd taken the advice offered here..."

It looks pretty white in the picture, which makes me suspect the price culprit is the clarity and not the color... which is actually more of a concern because like was previously stated I-clarity stones can have durability issues. So yes, get it checked out.

I would not waste my time or money on this stone. The ratio is off, and the diamond looks more like "crushed ice" - you don't see the normal princess facet patterning at all. It also looks small for a 1.7.

I'm sure you could find a much nicer stone, don't settle for something "just because". I would keep looking, you can do better!
