My wife went to a vintage jewelry store and was dazzled by a green diamond. I guess it’s irradiated. I’m just like oh boy, here we go again. I just barely started to understand a little bit about diamonds and she finds irradiated haha!! The problem is, I can’t really find any comps. It’s $3500 set in platinum and 1.5ct. She doesn’t “get all that gia stupid stuff” so let’s just assume si1. Here are some bad pictures she took. She said it’s stunning in person. I’m very intrigued by the lack of irradiated diamonds on ebay, etc. Are they pretty neat? Or frowned on? Are they rare?

I think I’d buy a lab colored diamond or a colored stone before going with a color treated green diamond.

Have you seen this mint garnet?

Or these lab diamonds?

I can help.
I own a 2.35 carat irradiated diamond.
I’ve done a bit a research and green is uncommon, but I wouldn’t call an irradiated diamond “rare” per se, but definitely uncommon.
I was told from another jeweler who purchased a natural green diamond for his mother that natural green diamonds are extremely rare, and irradiated green is one of the lesser common colors (I’m guessing supply and demand). Blue and pink are what people mostly ask him for to better answer your question.
As for frowned upon I guess it depends who you ask. LOL, I don’t think I’ve seen too many natural diamonds that have irradiated color on here.

If I tell my wife there aren't a lot of them, and most people don't like them, she will buy this ring immediately. So I have to choose my words carefully, ha!

You're looks pretty awesome! She said I have to see it in person to understand, because it sparkles like a diamond, but it's green.

I inherited one from my mother - it looks like a darker green. I quite like it, but the band bling is uncomfortable for me:

LOL! I can understand why she likes it. It’s definitely different, I love the lighter shade.

I think that's just her iphone being weird. I don't think it's that light. I guess I'm going to go see it. I'm trying to convince her to collect edwardian platinum pieces with me. But I don't think I'm going to win ha!

Love it! If you get it come back with pictures!

Got some new pics and video. It's so light. I'm suspicious it's a lab. Most irradiated diamonds are darker, correct?

I do like the platinum setting! My wife says we'll wait a year and maybe request a lower price. We don't think anyone else will buy it.

I believe they come in all shades, I’m no expert but I’ve seen lighter ones. I think it’s beautiful and it looks beautiful on your wife!

It's really growing on me. Tonight my wife told me I was wrong, it's not $3500, it's $3000. I'm guessing we might be able to get it for $2500. Seems very difficult to tell her no at that price.

It's a pretty piece.

The setting looks like it's got good metal weight. It looks like it's pretty well made, from the short video. Even a "cheaper" similar setting from say, Ivy and Rose, would probably end up around $1200 to 1600 with a setting fee if you were to ask them to set a stone. Their settings are lighter weight than others, but the price reflects it. This setting looks more substantial than most of theirs based upon photos. So, if you assume you have $1600 minimum for a similar setting and band, that leaves the rest for the stone.

A quick search does show lab grown greens are available, but not super common. Probably because ppl want blue or pink. Anyway, a little website looking shows a 1.4 to 1.6 carat green lab is anywhere from $1500ish to over 4000. Some are ugly. Some are attractive.

Prices are all over for irritated greens that are non lab. Whether they move in sales, I don't know!

I think this one will be quite hard to get rid of if you want to later. But, if she loves it and you can get it for $2500 or less, the math isn't bad compared to doing the project on your own.

But from a pure cost to recreate the look, it's not terrible as a finished piece. I do think a mint garnet would be an option , but a very nice mint garnet will be just as much as a lab green diamond, at least from what I can see.
