I found a diamond that might work, its 1.40ct J VS1 7.16 x 7.19x 4.42, scores 0.9 on the HCA. The only thing I'm a bit concerned about is the colour J, other than that am I missing anything ? It is in the 7,000 - 8,000 range. Thanks for your help.

Hi chamois! What is the lab, cut grade, and other specs (depth, table, crown, pavillion)? Have you seen this stone in person? If buying online, can you post the link? I have a J and I am happy with it, but it's not for everyone. The amount of body tint you will see greatly depends on the things I bolded above AND what type setting your son plans to buy. <---- settings that show more of the stone from the side view will show more tint than those that do not, i.e. halos, bezels...

Lots of questions, I know... :halo:  Your son is working with a nice budget, so I think you'll be able to help him. PS veterans are always a huge help! I'm no veteran/expert for sure, but I'll help as much as I can!

It's a GIA Ex. 56 table, depth, 61.6, 33.5 crown angle and 40.8 pav. angle. Thanks for your response.

Thanks. It does score well on the HCA, but if you're worried about the color, I really like this stone. It's a GIA XXX, I/VS2 with Strong Blue fluorescence (which will make it look even whiter!!) and it scored well on the HCA (@1.3) for $7570.

I would put this on hold ASAP before someone else does!

Most people like an HCA between 1-2 (but this is nitpicking... under 2 is good)

Thanks MS. Why is between 1-2 HCA more liked ?

HCA is a screening tool for well cut diamonds that will perform well optically. Anything under 2 is considered to be "safe". So it's not just 1-2, but 0-2.

OP, madelise is right... The 1-2 stat was taken taken from the HCA tutorial here on PS:

https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

The quote actually went like this...
"Most people prefer stones that rate 1-2 on a scale where: 0-2 Excellent, 2-4 Very Good, 4-6 Good, 6-8 Fair, and 8-10 Poor."
