Helping my niece research her (potential) engagement ring

Most salt/pepper diamonds aren’t certified. She should check out https://www.kristincoffin.com/
She does a lot of grey moissanite that look really nice all different shapes. Nice alternative bridal

Thanks, I like these...I'll pass it on.

She sent me this idea last night. I like it. Traditional with a hint of funky due to the black center stone.

I must admit, her leaning toward dark stones has certainly been a learning experience for me. Thank goodness there is a lot of information on this site. I feel confident that if she wants something other than a colorless diamond, we'll find a quality stone at a reasonable price.

That’s really pretty! I know how you feel my sister is the same black or darks stones. She has very gothic style though and it suits her. Another she should look at is Heidi Gibson
She does a lot with black sapphires and black diamonds as well as white sapphires or diamonds. Very customizable too!

Kudos to your niece for knowing that she wants something unique and reflective of her at this time of life. Most of us don't throw the care of other folks opinions out until middle age. How fun to hunt for that elusive something - she will know it when she sees it because her heart will sing :)

I love to browse 1st dibs, ebay, and Ruby Lane. Almost all my jewelry is pre-loved even my engagement diamond. Since she likes black I thought of her when I saw these today...All of the following would likely have to have wedding bands made to go with.

I personally love this - the sapphire looked like a galaxy to me so I threw it in here

It doesn’t matter what I think, obviously, it is what she thinks, but I LOVE the idea of a diamond haloed in onyx!!!

I do like that idea (black stone as the accent, rather than center, stone)...more sparkle but still a bit funky. I would be a bit concerned about onyx for a 24/7 lifetime ring, but maybe this is where a black diamond would be put to good use.

Hopefully she's ghosting this thread...otherwise, I'll throw out the ideas ;)

Thank you. Keep 'em coming. It's a busy time for her (getting ready for end of school year) so I suspect this thread will get busier as we get into the summertime.

Oh, good call, @TechieTechie , I wasn’t thinking about durability!

Didnt CVB make someone a onyx halo that was pretty...sorry if this has already been posted. Its an expensive setting so would have to be a smaller
center stone.

This is interesting...its got some kind of blackening on the bezel (halo?)

That is a important factor especially if she goes for a newly made setting where a stone would be set higher and more exposed. The real antique onyx from the 1920s are set very low and that protects the stones. I have one antique ring like this and the way it hugs the finger is a dream for comfort - would never snag etc. and the fact that they are still around and intact after 100 years speaks to their durability. Other than onyx or black diamond she could also consider black sapphire since sapphire is harder than onyx.

^ also black spinel is a good option

Thanks for the reminders regarding 1st dibs and Ruby Lane. Particularly the latter. I sent her a bunch of rings (both vintage and modern) and we have something that has caught her eye. The return policy is crappy (3% restocking fee) but I'm getting a little better sense of what she wants. Traditional with a hint of funky. Here is the one she really likes.

I just remembered she wants a band too, and the design of this ring might be cause for a custom band (that would potentially put the purchase out of their price range). Any ideas about a band to go with this?

This is a FUN project! Can’t wait to see where this ends up. I kinda like the idea of grey diamond but not salt & pepper - different but maybe more staying power. Just an opinion....

Diamonds by lauren has a GIA grey 1.5ctw diamond for $4k. It’s I1 but not peppery - it’s pretty cool imho.

@TechieTechie

Fyi, this same ring is listed in her etsy store at 25% off + free shipping - sale ends in 36 hours per listing - the etsy listing also includes video link

her etsy store does not have a restocking fee

I think a curved band would work possibly. If she wants a set.

She might want to see if she actually wants a band. I hate wearing a band personally. I find it to be just uncomfortable. It's not a size issue, it's that I don't like more than one band at a time.
