Hi All,

Just reaching out since you've all been so helpful in the past! My friend's coworker is looking for an engagement ring for his gf and since I helped her pick her ring she reached out to me to help him. He is willing to spend between $7-$11K for a 1 carat cushion in a halo setting. Can you help!?


BTW - In August you all picked a cushion cut stone for my coworker and she LOVES it!! She ended up setting the diamond in an old setting - I'll update that thread in a little bit with pics...I meant to do it awhile ago but life got a little crazy.

Hi there, so nice of you to help out your friend's colleague with the ring selection.
Do you know if the fiancé-to-be wants a H&A cushion, vintage cushion, X-factor cushion, "crushed ice" cushion? There are so many different cushions on the market. I have an H&A cushion from BGD and I love the symmetrical look of it as well as it seems performance, very close (if not the same) as a round H&A. But not everyone is after the same "look" as they are more square vs elongated.

he hasn't specified the type of cut, but would definitely want to avoid the "crushed ice" look

Hey everyone thank you for your responses! He doesn't want a rose gold setting...must be platinum and I'm not so sure how open to buying preowned he is!! What are your thoughts on this diamond?

Do you think it would look warm against a platinum halo? What are your thoughts on halo's designed by engagement rings direct? Has anyone priced out their halo's recently ?

It will be warm set in a platinum halo (I have a GIA K cushion, not an AVC set in platinum) but it will be gorgeous. ERD makes beautiful halos. They can make both CAD and handforged. When we looked last year, the halos were around 3K for CAD in 18K so with the budget, I'd say you are probably looking at a CAD from them in Platinum.

I would not pick a K for an engagement ring unless the recipient knows what that means. Especially against a halo- you will definately see a color difference.

IMO you can't go wrong with that cushion and an ERD halo. Since ERD is custom making it they can source melee that is also nearer to the K color. For the majority of people out there, the color won't be noticeable esp with an AVC I owned one of the protypes and let me tell you NO ONE will notice a hint of color when they are comparing their likely dull stones compared to the flashes of bold color that beauty will throw at you!

I 100% agree it will be a beauty, and i wouldn't kick a K AVC in a halo out of bed! But without knowing how color sensitive the recipient is I would hesitate to go that low in color. Without knowing anything about her friends circle/her taste, it just seems risky. Thats just my opinion of course. When giving a ring as a surprise I always feel it is a little better to be safe than sorry, especially when you are dropping $$$!

OP, can you ask the buyer to do some more digging? can he find out her pinterest? Can he talk to her friends? what kinds of rings do they have?
