So I pretty much got my engagement ring from Jared for my girlfriend. I have yet to give it to her, I'm planning on proposing in March/April. My girlfriend originally loved a ring from Michael Hill, but I haven't really heard of them and I know there's more Jared's around than Michael Hill stores. So I had it custom made (to look exactly like the one from Michael Hill) but it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to! And they told me, once it's made from the mold it can't be modified. I kept on telling them I wanted it to be less squarish, but all they said is "the actual finished product will look less blocky". Nope! I'm very disappointed.
My question is... if I bought the setting from Michael Hill, will the WARRANTY I got from Jared be voided???
Please, I need help if anyone knows something on this matter. How will Jared know in switched the setting if it looks similar kinda to the Michael Hill one.
P.s.- I will be using the stones from Jared, if I get the setting from Micheal Hill.

Whatever is the Jared “warranty?” Are you able to purchase just a setting from Michael Hill? Post a picture of the ring you got. If it’s blocky it may be able to be filed down.

I don't imagine Michael Hill would be willing to use the melee stones from a Jared ring.

Yes, a photo of the goal setting and the custom ring would be helpful.

Basically the"Lifetime Warranty" includes free replacement of any diamonds if they fall off or get damaged. Free cleaning, all that good stuff, for life.
And yes, I just talked to Michael Hill and they said they can use my main center stone and use a setting of theirs.
The melee stones, I'm assuming are the small side stones, yeah probably no. So I may have to buy their setting and use the center diamond from Jared.
Here I'll post a pic up of what I got, and what I want.

As you can see, the one from Michael Hill looks more delicate and rounded through the ring. The one from Jared is totally flat from the sides, no "roundness"

That may be partially fixable. You need to find a good bench jeweler to work on the setting (NOT NOT NOT Jared or any other maul jeweler). Then can simply round the lower edge of the shank and the prongs. If you let us know which major cities are within travel distance (and what country you are based), maybe a PS member can recommend a good bench to do the repair.

Yes please recommend! I'm in the U.S. in the Chicagoland area. Mainly in Arlington heights/Schaumburg/Logan Square areas.
Anyone know if a good bench jeweler? I didn't even know of these people that fix jewelry like this

I think what you are asking is if you get the Michael Hill but take it back to Jared if it loses a stone, will they notice it’s not their setting? Am I right? Diamond gallery on Rt 59 in Naperville has a good bench.

AprilBaby YES! That's exactly what I'm asking. If something happens like a stone missing, also the regular 6 month free cleaning, will Jared notice that the ring is from Michael Hill? Because I know that every diamond has like a serial number, but the diamond is the same so that would not change

The reps at Jared vary. Some would not notice, someone else might. It would void the warranty if it’s switched so you take a gamble. I also bet the Michael Hill has a marking inside. Does Jared sell Michael Hill? A good rep would see that.

They will notice. If its an in-house design, Michael Hill rings have their maker's mark. "MHJ" from a quick search. Jared likely marks their pieces. I would really not do this. You've already established with Jared can't make a good ring, why trust them with maintenance?

Edited to add (borrowed from another bulletin board):

Rockysalamander ugh I didn't think about Michael Hill rings being engraved with "MHJ"
Hmm, well my next question would be, if I go to a good bench jeweler, would Jared notice if I made a change to the ring? (Regarding the making the ring rounded throughout)

Again...why do you care about the Jared warrenty? You can and should clean the ring yourselves and frequently. If the side-stones fall out -- they are about $50 each and maybe another $50 to reset from a totally new jeweler on the very outside. I had one replaced for $60 total. Otherwise, the ring will need repair that is far and above what your warranty covers. Here is what it won't cover: she resized the ring and that caused the stones to fall out; the entire head came off or was bent due to hitting a wall/floor/cabinet/ground, the shank is torqued as she slammed in car door or stepped on in yoga class, she snags the main prongs and the main stone falls out. None of these will be covered. If you miss a single "maintenance" appointment, they will void the warranty. Bottom line - the maintenance plan is worth - at most - a few hundred dollars. Are you really willing to risk a fraud conviction for that?

Insure the ring privately (you should do this anyway if you cannot afford to replace it out of pocket). If you insure through JewelersMutual (also look at Gemsafe), you get free annual maintenance wherever you like, and you are covered for loss, theft and damage (including international loss and mysterious loss in the case of JM).

Did you approve the wax mold? If not, you have some grounds to return it. A warranty with Jared is just a license for them to screw it up some more.

Hmm... Rockysalamander, that's a great idea. Yeah I REALLY don't want to risk a fraud conviction for that. I didn't really think about that. JewelersMutual sounds great! Thanks for all of this advice I seriously really appreciate all of it! You've saved me some trouble. I just wanna look at the ring and be like "wow". That's not the case right now so I'll work with either a bench jeweler (or Michael Hill) and then get it insured via JM.

Does JM or Gemsafe cover the entire ring??

Dobermam, I did approve the wax. 2 weeks later it was made. I just received the finished product yesterday. I don't like it, but the rep told me that no changes can be made. It's final.:cry2:

I'm glad I did not offend you!

Start with trying to get it fixed or at least get quotes. Like I said, it looks fixable to me provided Jared actually properly set the pave diamonds. That worries me more than if the ban can be more comfort fit/rounded. In the end, the setting is about the quality of the workmanship.

Also, rather than buying another setting, maybe have your diamond set in a simple solitaire and after the proposal...look together for a setting. Once she gets a chance to wear an actual ering (assuming this is her first time) for a bit and looking at wedding bands, she may find that she wants something lower, wider, skinnier, less pave or more.

Read up on JM. They cover the whole ring...just insure for what you paid. Compare to gemsafe and see what suits. There are also many threads here on insurance.

It’s disappointing when your design doesn’t turn out right. And the left hand side metal (diamonds 3 and 4) is thicker than the right side. It’s not a good rendition of the MJH ring you liked. And the bottom of the head (near the insert sapphire) is that all mushy / poorly finished or just an awkward reflection?
I’ll just agree, forget about any silly warranty or the like with Jared or Micheal Hill, it’s just not worth the $$$ And won’t necessarily cover you the way you think. Read their fine print, it usually only covers workmanship warranty. And if they even think you’ve taken the ring elsewhere for “work”, they’ll void your warranty instantly. Get proper insurance.
