I am just a beginner learning about diamonds. I have a diamond solitaire engagement ring that does not have much color, it mostly looks white and it is .69 carats, set in white gold, my wedding band was my grandmother''s also set in white gold. My mother gave me her diamond stud earrings, .50 each for a total of 1. These studs are set in yellow gold and the diamonds have a yellowish tint to them. I would really like to have the earrings re-set into a ring, possibly added to my engagement ring to make a three-stone ring. I like lots of sparkle and also wanted to add some smaller diamonds on the shank from some other jewelry that was given to me. I love the antique or vintage look of my wedding band and would like my engagement ring to be the same. My questions: would it look ok to mix the slightly yellow stones with the more clear solitaire in the same ring? Would white gold be good for this? If the three stones would not look good together, is there another way to use just the two diamonds? Many thanks!!

I might would take all three stones to an appraiser and get an estimate on their colors (no certifications right?). On PS you generally
hear to stay within two color shades. The earings could be reflecting some of the gold from their setting and you might not see so
much color when they are unmounted.

You could try holding the two potential side stones face up with the e-ring stone, and try to cover up the settings, then see if you think that the three look "close enough" together. Then look at them from the side and see whether the smaller ones look much more yellow than the e-ring. If you think they look okay, then they probably are. But be really, really, critical now so that you're not disappointed later, after they are set together in a ring. The stones in the shank could be color-matched to the two side diamonds, rather than to the center.

There's an old adage that says color is not readily evident in RB diamonds of .25ct and smaller. Unless they are really yellow, they will probably look whiter in WG than in YG. I had diamond wedding band of J diamonds in YG. I dismantled it and had the set a cocktail ring of WG. They were yellow-looking when in all-YG. But they look white now in the new ring, and don't even look like the same stones. 1/8 ct each.

Another thought is since they are earrings they might have a film of oil of hairspray or whatever, and a good cleaning will whiten them again.

I don''t think I would mix diamonds that vary by more than a couple of grades, unless the difference was very large, like 6 grades, so that the contrast looked purposeful. I think taking them to get appriased is a good first step.

Well, it honestly depends on your preferences. If, side by side the center stone is obviously much whiter than the sidestones I wouldn''t do it.

Another option, if that''s the case and you would like to re-use those smaller stones in a ring, is to get a colored stone as your center stone.

Ditto

I would have them removed from the studs and see how they look next to your ering diamond. If you notice the color too much then I would probably not mount them with your ering but use them as side stones with a colored stone as others have suggested.

I guess I am different from the rest. I think if there was a very noticable difference I would mount them together. If they are close but not quite the same I wouldn''t mount them. Like I would be happy to do a G color next to like an M color. As long as the side stones match I would do it. However I would not make a ring with diamonds down the shank if that was the case. I''ve seen many 3 stone rings with multiple diamond colors and as I said as long as the two side stones match well I like it.

First up, you need to remove the potential side stones from their yellow gold setting. I''ve just had a pair of trilliants F colour set in yellow gold and they look very yellow indeed (which of course they''re not). So, I wouldn''t assume that they won''t work as side stones.

When you have them unmounted, place all 3 stones on some white paper and see if they look good together. If yes, then go ahead and set in white gold (always good for bringing out the whiteness in a diamond).

Also, whilst posters on this forum will say to stay within X number of colour grades, that doesn''t hold for the "normal" consumer necessarily. Some people can''t see differences in colour very well and will happily accept a much greater difference. Definitely get the diamonds un-set and then go from there.
