Hello Diamond Experts,

I am debating between the following two diamonds for an engagement ring - the cost is similar (~$2500 CDN).

What are your opinions of the Sirius Star cut? Is the trade off for the poorer colour and smaller size good value for the Sirius Star cut?

When we saw the diamonds, even though the Sirius star is of poorer colour, it was noticeably whiter than the other diamond. The Sirius Star is vintage (re-cut) while the other is an diamond from a mine in Ontario, Canada.

The Sirius Star concerns me due to the poor pavilion angle in the report (34.8°). But in the store it appeared marginally brighter.

Thanks for your help!

All those extra facets pavillion side certainly help out with light return!

Given it was recut, I could probably accept the extra facets and the chip that are on the pavillion side of the girdle. Any images of that particular Sirius Star? Same goes with the regular RBC that you also looked at.

Thanks for your comments!

I am also concerned about the chip on the pavillion side and whether it will make the diamond more susceptible to damage in future.

I don't have any images as this is in store - we will go again tonight to have a look again at them.

The word "chip" sounds scary. But it is the second notable inclusion after cloud at VVS2 clarity, meaning , in general, a non issue

Thanks for your comments!

We went into the store today to have another look - at the fire and more carefully under a jewellers magnifying glass, the cloud inclusion was actually visible - completely black - this was a big surprise due to the otherwise VVS2 clarity.

The other diamond was perfectly clean at 10x to our eyes.

Although the Sirius Star did sparkle more, we ended up going with the Ontario diamond as it was visually clean at 10x and also we found the "fire" to be larger rather than many little fires due to the cut on the pavilion of the Sirius Star.

Very good observation on two completely different styles of cut.

Nice choice. You had two amazing stones side by side, and you could tell the difference and you knew what you liked the most.

Congrats! Here's to many years of enjoyment ahead :)
