Hello everyone!

First of all, I want to thank the community for helping me pick out my diamond! This forum has been such a great resource for me.

I recently received my ring from Blue Nile. When I ordered I asked them to shape the prongs into single claw. However, the result is very subtle. I think that it makes my cushion look more square and I would like something that hugs the diamond closer at each corner. Here are the photos:

I would like to do a double prong (or single) similar to these styles:

However I am unsure about taking it a local jeweler. It would void my warranty with Blue Nile and I don’t have many options in my area. I don’t want a jeweler to damage my ring or do a horrible job with the prongs.

Sending it to Blue Nile would take 8-12 weeks and I wasn’t pleased with their attempt at single claw prongs. Granted, that was without a CAD and not a custom order but more of a suggestion.

So my question is should I keep my current prongs? Take a risk with a local jeweler? Send to Blue Nile?

I should mention that my diamond is 1 carat and I plan on pairing it with this band:

Your stone looks beautiful and congrats on your engagement! Bluenile doesn't do a great job with prongs at all and quite frankly, a lot of their settings lack finesse. Would you consider sending the setting back and working with a PS recommended jeweler to recreate something similar but more refined and better proportion?

Where are you located?

Thank you!

For my budget I don’t think that would be an option, but thanks for the idea! I do like the setting and picked Blue Nile due to their affordability. I was hoping it could make a minor tweak to the prongs but now am thinking it might open up ‘another can of worms’

I am located in West Virginia.

I would ask IDJ if they having something similar in stock bc they do great double prongs if you can retur your setting to BN.

I don't disagree that the prongs could be refined, but I also think you are comparing apples and oranges. Your cushion is square. That mean that anything added to the corners will emphasize the squareness. Your inspiration pics are elongate and rounded/old cut and rounded/old cut, respectively.

To achieve your goal, I think they need to really space out the prongs and thin them out.

Other options would be a halo or bezel that will visually emphasize the shape

Thank you both!

I can see what you mean about the prongs being spaced out. I will make sure and incorporate that if I decide to change the prongs.

Does anyone know of jewelers that could accomplish that with my current setting? Maybe a price range? I am okay with sending my ring away because I don’t think I could find someone locally.

I'd contact ID Jewelry in NYC. They do great work. You could contact Quest in Fairfax Virginia, although I don't know if they will repair a setting they did not sell (but give it a try).

You could also simply return the setting to BN and then find a new one (keeping the diamond you actually like). That would allow you to look for a double prong setting from the outset. If you go that route, maybe contact Joseph Schubach about the cost of a setting like this that would suit your diamond. {or even get a few quotes from vendors on a new setting to see what is cost effective).

If you were willing to return your setting (only) and send your stone to James Allen they have this setting.

(its on sell right now for $1155 but unfortunately the sell ends tonight.) Regular price is $1540.

Here is a the setting (looks like they went with a gold basket) and double claw prongs. You may have to pay extra for the double claw prongs.

I have claw prongs and my setting came from JA so I know they can do them fairly decently. You have to ask and depending on the setting, you may
have to pay additional.

If you try to find a local jeweler to do it ask to see some of the claw prongs they've done or at least some pictures. Not everyone can do them.
