DbL got rescheduled until Friday and I'm also visiting a friend recommended place (Kadella Diamonds) then.

But, seeing the diamonds at IDJ really did help reset my expectations! I was nitpicking over things that I could see in the high level magnifications on the websites, but in person it was negligent. I've narrowed down to 2 potential choices there and put a hold on one. The one I prefer right now is a 2.01 carat, VS2, G that seemed to sparkle really well even without the jewelry store light. The other one wasn't as active in the middle (but still good), but due to it's measurements (7.39 x 7.32 x 4.49) looked much larger. It's 2.05 carat, VS1, H (https://idjewelry.com/asscher-idd00591.html). Both are the same price (~$14500).

I'll definitely report back after visiting the other stores.

Is the VS2/G the one I loved? The antique-y one? I’ve been dying to hear how it looked in person.

@ILikeShiny - I saw that one too! The one I mentioned above is close (in stats) but different. The one linked looked good, but it did have a bit of a "dark square" in the middle that was visible so I kept that as a backup.

I have spoken to this seller, and he IS willing to sell the center stone without the setting. Just for the record! :))

I think I might pass out!! What an opportunity!!! :eek2:

Its really small compared to what OP is looking at. Deliberately blurry cert but it’s 4.something square.

Not sure where you saw that? It’s an F/VS1 measuring 6.4 x 6.41 x 4.45mm and is 1.54ct for just the center stone (over 2 carats with the mounting).

FWIW I have a 1.52
6.35mm x 6.15mm x 4.29 mm

That Asscher too deep at 69.5% mine is a tad too deep also at 69.7

And if I had to do it over, I should have dropped color to H and clarity to vs2 and went up on size.

My CVB setting fixed it, but I was really having DSS for a while.

It’s a precision cut Royal Asscher. I’m pretty sure they know what they’re doing when it comes to proportions.

It’s going to face up small. My point. I’d go with the 2.01

2.05 Idj for instance vs 1.53 royal asscher

I just think with an asscher bigger is better and if you have the opportunity to go bigger, you should.

I've been lusting over that RA for a while now. Wish it would sell so temptation would be removed!

That point I agree with. My point was about the comment on depth. But yes, if he loves the 2.01 asscher it’s definitely a noticeable size difference. Asschers are unfortunate because we really do get cheated on face-up size o_O

Yes, we really do. The deeper the asscher, the smaller the face up is what I have read. Doesn’t matter if it is branded or not, it’s going to face up like a 1 carat round... Maybe like a CBI one carat but still a one carat.

It’s about the same size as mine and I’ve compared mine to rounds before in diamond database.

It’s something you can’t appreciate until you see it.

(The same with sapphires btw)

Here is a 1 carat CBI stone vs the 1.53 Royal Asscher just to see....

I've done my rounds of all the stores and will be thinking through the choices over the weekend (if I can manage to have some time alone discreetly!). I also took some videos, but it's probably hard to discern just from those due to lighting.

2.01, VS2, G, $14600 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1wc26pmsdZ5BaOwovkF2lTKovA58UCle1) - This one and the below are from IDJ. I preferred this one for its sparkle, though it appeared smaller (due to the smaller table).
2.05, VS1, H, $14500 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tIalmbvTepA9-Yb4DmiEKjhE4QxGtRoB) - Definitely the "largest" looking of the 2 carats I saw. For comparison, the solitaire ring it's in there was around a size 4.5 or 5 (iirc). I just didn't feel the middle was as alive as the other stones in this list, but still better than most that I saw. The measurement for the top is 7.39 x 7.32mm which is why it's relatively so big.
2.01, VS1, H, $13800 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_YtpLJe46hUsuMdm-GnhHcib5IbV8-N0) - This one was the only one I saw in basically natural light (right next to the window). In the video, it starts without any special lighting. Not sure if it's a bit yellow though.

I went to DbL and saw one of their octavias set in a ring. Definitely beautiful! But not what I was looking for. However, I also saw this stone (http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/ind...nd-117ct-g-vvs2-emerald-cut-diamond-gia-r7237) which was cut by Yoram. 1.17ct, VVS2, G, $11K. It was gorgeous! But, the size was a bit small - about 1 mm smaller on the top than most others I was looking at.

@whitewave - Where are you getting those diamond sizing images from? I've been considering these specialty cuts a bit more (the DbL one and the royal asscher), but want to understand what that size difference means.

And thanks again to everyone for all the comments - you guys make this slightly scary search way more comfortable!

OP - Have you contacted IDJ? They have done a great job for many (myself included) in finding beautiful asschers at very good prices.
I just took a quick look at their website and saw this one listed. It’s a 2.01ct G/VS2 (appears eye clean) and is by far better than any that I saw on your list, IMO (others please do chime in with your thoughts). Click on “actual image” and there’s a video linked to it. I think the facets are crisp, the windmills are perfect and a bit fat (which I love), there’s an awesome kobize, and it’s a tiny table with a high crown. All of these have me suspecting it’s either a very well cut antique or a newly cut antique-style asscher. Either way, the light return appears fantastic and it really makes me wish I was in the market for an asscher right now!!

That IDJ 2.01 looks pretty awesome to my eyes too! A little off square if that matters to you, but beautiful.

I also echo expanding some of the parameters to vs, you may bnb hahavhahave more options and be able to get more uumph for you're money.

It's cool that you've had a chance to check out the options, including the Octavia - they are rare beasts! :)

Sounds like you also like the Yoram asschers - that one might be a bit small but he might be able to cut another one to your specs!

You could either ask him direct through Gemconcepts or go via DbL - IIRC buying direct might mean not having the option to return if for some crazy reason you don't love it, whereas DbL might offer more 'peace of mind' :)

Do you have access to the carts for your three video options?

*certs

I have photocopies of the first 2 (but not on me right now) and am asking for the GIA report number for the third. I can link them here in a bit.

I think that would be useful. The one you choose you should feel stands out for you, for whatever reason. I suppose really it should stand out for your lady but let’s hope there’s emotional symmetry between you! It’s a real advantage to buy a step cut in person.
