Hi guys,

I've got a price range of around $5k for an engagement ring. I am looking for some general insight of what to look for in an engagement ring... My girlfriend has helped give me some input on what she's looking for:
-pear shape
-D or E colour
-fairly good clarify (of course)

I am uncertain whether to buy from a local jeweller or to purchase online (Blue Nile). I am gettig pricing from my local jeweller and it seems somewhat comparable but appears slightly more expensive - however, I have this feeling there's a trade off because if I buy online I "won't really know what I'm getting". Do you guys strongly suggest buying online?

Here's an example of a ring for $3,900 CAD at the jeweller:

When searching Blue Nile, I get this for $4,300:

Long and the short of it:
1. Do you recommend buying online? Are there hesitations with buying online (if a GIA report is provided)?

2. Any input on what specifics I should be focused on? Are there hidden imperfections I need to be mindful, despite diamonds having VS or VVS?

Any help or input is appreciated.

Cheers,
Derek

With fancy shapes like pears, I'd rather work with a vendor that can call in the virtual stones and look at them. If the BN stones are in the US, vendors like IDJ and other PS recommended vendors can usually call them in to give you their feedback.

Hi Derek!
The D looks pretty decent but the photo of the E is just a sample photo so cant really evaluate. Lets just say it has a really large table.

We usually look for eye-clean which you should be able to get at the VS level (and maybe even at the SI1 level).

The reason we usually suggest on-line buying is that it gives you options of many more stones. Jewelers usually only want to bring in maybe 3 stones
and want you decide between those. You might be able to find a stone on-line then ask your local jeweler to bring it in so that you can see it/buy it.

James Allen is a good place to look. Looks like you are in Canada so Bluenile is also an option. They cant do aset but honestly, asets are that great
for pears (IMO).

Looks like $5k CAD us $3879USD right?

I have to get kids off to school but hopefully someone else will help or I will help when I get back.

I just love a nice pear! Fancy shapes you really need a video or have it brought in to look at it. Nothing wrong with shopping online, just do due diligence and buy from a reputable company with a good return policy.

Really hard to tell from just a photo what the performance will be like. When you're looking at videos or viewing in person, you want to look at how the facets move. You're looking for flashes from end to end. Pears tend to have mush/deadness close to the tips so watch out for those areas. As far as the color, i included some F color stones simply because F is in the colorless range and is VERY WHITE, i doubt the typical person could distinguish a D from an F.

I'm no expert, i just picked some that looked nice to my untrained eyes. I tried to choose a variety of shapes and some of the SI1 stones you may need to confirm if they're eye clean or not. Maybe some of the more experienced posters will comment on the stones.

The .90 F vs1 looks like a beauty to me.

Awesome thank you guys! I agree, the 0.9 F VS1 looks beautiful to me.

I've heard this term a few times - what does "aset" mean? Is it like a 3rd party review or opinion?

Thanks for all your input everyone - you are all extremely helpful on this!

Hi guys,

I have gone ahead and requested an aset image for the 0.9-F-VS1 diamond:

What are your guys' opinion of this diamond? It looks quite clean, especially on the face (table?) and the clarity in the 360' looks great.

The diamond seems great to me, but I need some knowledgeable opinions on this one. The diamond says it's "sold", but I've asked it to be on hold until I get the aset back... I will post the image once I get the report back.

Exciting stuff - thanks guys :D

Hi Derek! What is an ASET? Try here for some really basic info: https://enchanteddiamonds.com/education/how-to-read-an-aset-image

VS1 is definitely going to be eye clean. Remember you are zoomed WAY in on these stones so even though you may see a little dot zoomed in, it's going to be eye clean. Requesting an ASET puts a HOLD on the stone so this is great while you're still trying to decide =)2

I like that E VS2 you posted above too but i do think i am slightly leaning to the F, i feel like the tip of the F has broader flashes of light than the E. They are of similar size though and price would probably sway me when choosing from the two of them. You could request an ASET on the E, JA will do up to 3 ASET's for you.

Thanks you Farrahlyn for all your help and support on this. I'm running a bit blind here

So I got the Aset report results, and I think the diamond looks ok to me..? But I need some help interpreting how good or bad it looks.

Here is written feedback from JA and the aset image itself - what do you guys think?
