I bought this ring a while ago, for 500 dollars. could anybody please tell me if you see any evidence of the lead or berylium treatments. Sorry about the photos will try to take better ones later on . this ring is in a very heavy setting 15gram 14k, cannot see thru the back due to comfort grip. I have read extensively on treatments for ruby''s but I cannot tell what has been done.

regards,

Chris

Chris,
Unfortunately, nothing can be determined by pictures alone. I suggest bringing it to a gemologist locally for a best guess. If you want something more definitive, the gemologist or appraiser will need additional equipment.

Testing for lead/glass filling can be done with expert equipment and some (not all) gemologists are able to do it. Do you have a loupe? One tell tale siign (although it''s not conclusive by any means) is evidence of gas bubbles. Unfortunately about 90% of rubies on the market will have had some form of treatment either fracture healing or filling.

However, testing for BE diffusion requires specialist equipment. This can ONLY be done in a lab.

p.s. sometimes it looks purple or pink, sometimes it looks red all depending on lighting conditions. its always in the hue of red, but its not a very vivid stone. does anybody here think its pretty, im very self conscious of wearing ugly jewelry. opinions on the ring/ruby''s look will also be helpful. having a hard time deciding whether or not to wear it. the camera helps its color a bit.

Chris

First and foremost do YOU think its pretty? Mine or anyone elses opinion won''t count for jack if you don''t like it.

I''m not a big ruby fan, but thats a personal preference. I think the ring is nice and I love the shape of it, so sure, I''d wear it. I personally wouldn''t buy a ruby though.

As far as treatments, you''ll need to take it to a gemologist to see what types of treatments is on the stone. Treatments on rubies can''t be seen with the naked eye generally, and is impossible anything beyond color from a picture.

A huge ditto from me on that one.

If in doubt, I usually take photos of it on my hand (on the finger I''d wear it and then see how I feel). Sometimes I take the photo, don''t look at it for a few days and then come back to it. That usually helps me decide.

I’m with Arcadian and LD on the gem colour. Buy and wear what you like. It doesn’t and shouldn’t matter what others think, as long as you didn’t overpay for it by a lot.
