Help with mixing brilliant and step cuts?

Hi friends!

New here so please let me know if I'm doing something wrong!

I'm still in the fairly early stages of picking out a ring, so I have a million questions. Please let me know if I should be creating different threads for differing topics or if I can dump questions in here, but let's start with this one thing --

I want a rectangular center stone with pave-set baguettes on either side. So I'm currently debating between the emerald cut - my initial preference - and more recently, the radiant cut. The stores I've been to don't have rings that look anything like what I would want, so I'm stuck online shopping. Of course, with everything closed down now, online is pretty much my best bet anyway!

It's entirely possible I missed it but I've dug through PS for any kind of tips or guide on what looks better in terms of mixing brilliant and step cuts, but help! Also, I'm so impressed that so many people go through this process to buy fine jewelry more than once, I'm absolutely exhausted wading through all the specs already!

HI Niana,
Interesting quandary.
We've made many rings with step cut centers and brilliant side stones ( like traps)
it is a risky combo- you don;t want the sides out-sparkling the center.....

You used the term
pave-set baguettes

What did you mean?

I too am confused...are you talking radiant (brilliant) with the baguettes (step-cuts)?

Of course, emerald cut with baguettes would all be step-cut.

This was the initial ring style I fell in love with, but it's discontinued and I can't find anything similar anywhere else! It's fine by me because it means I can go custom and be picky about all the specs :geek2:

The closest I've found is this setting (yes, I know it's from MoCo but I was just looking for settings through image search), and I'm not a fan of the bars in between the baguettes but they have some radiant-cut stones on the same ring (in the video section) and now I'm torn between the EC and the radiant as to what looks better with this ring! Related: I really like the more elongated look of the emerald cut, and a lot of radiants I've seen are more square. Are there more elongated radiants out there as well?

Hope that helps clear up what I meant by mixing cut styles, tyty! I know an emerald cut is step but a radiant + baguette would not be the same "type", and I don't want it to clash.

Ok, a picture is worth a thousand words! That clears it up. There are lots of elongated radiants.

I'm sure someone can photoshop a radiant over the emerald cut for you. Not the same as seeing it live in person of course.
Did you ever see that setting in person?

How big of a main stone are you looking at?

I'm thinking around a carat , regardless of the shape. I've seen both stones in person, but as solitaires, so I'm curious which shape looks better with the baguettes. I haven't been able to find a single baguette setting in any of the stores I've been to, I didn't even consider it as an option until I started poking around online.

I've googled/checked on pricescope a little, and someone on PS in an old thread posted that mixing radiants and baguettes may not be the best idea, so I thought I'd ask!

Baguette Pave= got it!!

With a picture like that, you'll absolutely be able to find a shop that can recreate the setting.....

@Rockdiamond

Thoughts on radiant vs emerald in that setting?

If I have questions about things related to making that setting (eg band width, comfort fit, etc) do I throw them in here or should I be posting elsewhere?

Personally....A brilliant center with step-cut sides appeals to me. Yellow Radiant center with colorless step cut traps, for example. I would expect a well cut radiant to look great in a setting such as the one you posted.
But it's truly a personal decision. (If I'm working with a client, I generally try not to inject my own taste).....

I think this is the correct forum to discuss this.....

Radiant cut with channel set baguettes

Baguettes are very low key. Have you seen this setting in person? I had a 3 stone with small baguettes and my SIL thought the baguettes were
metal. They dont have bam factor like round pave...like I said, kind of low key.

These are both custom pieces. As you can see, I mix my step cuts with brilliants a good deal, I love the look. Good luck with your ring!

In your inspiration pic the main diamond looks much bigger than a carat. I encourage you to think about proportions and how wide you want the shank compared to the main diamond as you design your dream ring.
James Allen has a baguette band with round diamond. Maybe you could contact them and see if they have done that setting with emerald or radiant shapes.
