Greetings Everyone: I have a 1.24 ct. marquise diamond with the following stats:

Color: J-K
Clarity: I1 (pretty much eye clean except tilted in direct sunlight and then not glaring problems)
Cut: Fair - Good - very flat crown, but its undergone a little rehab and is better than it was - very good polish and good symmetry

Okay, my question is: If I were to walk this stone into a jeweler or pawn shop, what range of offer would I expect to receive? If the likely offer is in the neighborhood of 0 - 1000 dollars, I will probably just have it mounted and enjoy it as a fun item instead of selling it....what do you experts think on this matter?

I greatly appreciate your help and insight.

It's easy to do a price comparison against similar stones that online vendors will sell for retail value here. Use that as a bench mark to gauge your stone's "value".

Do note that the prices here are retail. This means you will get significantly less for your stone if a jeweler would give you a quote for taking in the stone.

Thank you for your reply. I've already determined what a similar stone is retailing for, and I know a buyer will offer significantly less, but I'm trying to find out a range of just how significantly less - I do realize it depends on the buyer and his/her business and location, but perhaps someone has an idea or range of what would be offered in their area. I don't live near any jewelers that purchase stones (or any pawnshops) so simple fieldwork will have to wait for a future time when I am in the city.

A jeweller probably won't offer you much more than the pawnshop. I'd say 20-50% of whatever retail would be. To figure out retail, try using the diamond search at the top if this page and maybe a similar-ish stone will pop up. You may want to include pears or other fancy cuts in your search to increase the chance of finding something similar.

If your stone has a grading report from GIA or AGS you can believe the grades, which are very low.
If the report is from another lab or you only have a seller's claim to the grades or an appraisal that the seller paid for then the color and clarity are probably 2 or more, maybe many more, grades lower than you were told.

Next, marquise were all the rage a generation or two ago, but not today.
Lastly, we civilians can expect to get a fraction of todays retail price that a pro with a store would get.
You can try to consign it if you don't mind waiting a year or two for a buyer so show up.

Based on all this and what you said I'd just, "have it mounted and enjoy it as a fun item".
Another alternative is to have it recut into a pear, which might sell faster and for a better price, even after losing carat weight.
