If someone could help me with some good guidelines as far as sites and the 4C to follow I can start hunting!

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Ok, so - it looks like 3 carats will be tough with a $20k budget unless you drop to a J/K color, which I wouldn't really recommend unless you're totally fine with seeing the color. For example:

4 C's are not exactly applicable for fancy cuts (well they are, but we prioritize cut above all so we need to discuss that first. Color, clarity, carat will fall into place after that depending on your budget).

Your inspiration photo is an elongated cushion (poorly cut from what I could see in the photo) and looks more like a crushed ice variety. We generally prefer and recommend stones with more defined faceting, which usually have larger, bolder flashes of light return rather than much smaller pinpoint sparkle and will also mask color better. Do you know what faceting you prefer?

There are old cut cushions and newly cut antique cushions, too, but I actually do like those in lower colors bc they usually have the chunkiest facets and are just delicious in all color varieties. Lastly, does it have to hit the 3 carat mark? It's more important to look at dimensions with fancy cuts as that matters more than how many carats. There are stones that may be under 3 carats that face up just as large, if not larger, than some stones over 3 carats.

I'd probably try enchanted diamonds. What color/clarity would you be willing to be your minimum?

Are you sure you want that type of cut in a cushion? Please check out the antique style cushions which don’t have that line across the center that many crushed ice cushions have. If you have already looked at antique style cushions and want one like the one you posted that is fine. I just wanted you to be fully aware of your options.

See this video that compares modern to antique style cushions.

Thank you for your reply!

It does not need to be 3 carats and spending less would be ideal, especially if the stone still looks large. I would like to stick to the elongated cushion stone, she has long, slim fingers and likes that shape. I do like the defined faceting stones much better, especially the antique style. Sorry I was not aware of the different styles. I honestly don't have clarity and color minimums yet as I'm still learning a lot as i research and the stores i've been to usually don't have this style stone in house. Would you guys be able to give me a range I should try to keep in mind as I look?

Thank you for your recommendation! No I don't know what min I want yet as I'm still learning but if you have any suggestions for me to look for I would appreciate it!

Do you know whether she prefers a cushion, that is elongated, with well defined facets, such as antique cushions? If so, great. But if she doesn't ... well, that would be aother can of worms.

Does she have a Pinterest page with rings on it? That could help narrow down the type of stuff that her eye is drawn to.

Agree with ringo - old cuts are beautiful, but they are a specific flavor of cushion and not everyone prefers them. I wouldn't go this route unless SHE likes them most as she will be the one wearing it. Is there any way you could ask her or have one of her family members or friends have a conversation with her?

Thanks for the help! Im going to speak with her and see what she like and get back to you guys thanks again!
