Help with jeweler recommendation for diamond upgrade

Hmm I don’t really see the point of getting it recut before I sell it? It will still be GIA triple excellent, same color and clarity, but a lower carat weight. How would that help me?
It won’t if it goes under the 3ct mark and I am saying this as someone who has done 3 recuts in the past.
The average consumer sees GIA XXX. Consignment might be a good idea and some local shops might be willing to take trade ins. You can also list it independently on Loupe Troop, Diamond Bistro, eBay, etc.

I think I’m leaning towards consigning my current ring/stone because I like the idea of having more flexibility in vendor choice for my upgrade.

This might sound crazy, but my biggest concern right now is that if it takes a while for my stone to sell through consignment, I’ll be without a ring the whole time... I hate the thought of not having an engagement ring to wear for months...

Get a sim in the approximate (but smaller) desired size of your new upgrade. Wear that in the interim. When you do get your upgrade, it’ll be larger than the temporary ring and it’ll be like another upgrade

How many carats is it exactly?

If it is over 3.0carats by a decent amount (3.10-3.20) and you get the diamond recut (about 400 a carat) but still over 3 carats you might increase the value of the diamond dramatically. But you would need a professional assessment of it. And I would call BGD or one of the other vendors that will do recuts and see if it is worth the investment.

Because an AGS0 would potentially be worth more than what you have now.

It might help to create a thread on preloved before you even co-sign. You never know what people are looking for and it will greatly depend on what you want to sell it for. “Bargains” usually go fast vs items with asking price that are closer to retail.

May I ask - do you absolutely want to change your diamond? A halo, for example, could drastically increase the visual size.

I don’t think it is worth it for me to go down the path of a recut because my stone is 3.06ct. I’m also looking for something super easy and risk-free, so selling to a jeweler or consigning are the two options I’m seriously considering.

I would love to keep my current stone AND get an upgrade, but my husband doesn’t see the point of owning multiple large diamonds :(2 I’m ready for more finger coverage, and since halo is not really my style, I definitely want to upgrade to a larger stone.

I LOVE this idea!!! I think this has just moved me 90% towards consigning, since I will have an interim plan :) Any suggestions for where to get one?

You should post your ring on the preloved forum, maybe a few PSer be interested in your ring.

You could use one of the PS approved appraisers as a middle man to exchange the money/stone. There is a term for this but it slips my mind at the moment.
Consignment is easier but usually takes more of your money.

Hi All,

Wanted to give a quick update. I was able to get quotes from a couple jewelers (thanks PS for recommendations!) and also looked into consignment. I actually think the jeweler quotes were pretty reasonable, ~75% of what we had originally paid for it, which is better than what I was expecting.

I was about to pull the trigger and sell to a jeweler, but the more real it gets the more I’m struggling with letting go of this stone... not only is there sentimental value, but I actually really love this stone and think it’s beautiful, even though it’s not within the “ideal” proportions. I’m now considering changing my mind all together, even though I really do want an upgrade to get more finger coverage. Maybe I should just re-set it so that it has a new look and perhaps in the future I can both keep the current stone and get an upgraded stone.

I think this is a brilliant idea.

I’m interested in upgrading my diamond, but will need to trade in my current stone during the process. I’d like to work with a jeweler who can do both the trade in and the upgrade, because I’d prefer not to deal with selling or consigning the stone myself. I’ve contacted a few of the highly recommended vendors on PS and am having a hard time finding a vendor who takes trade ins. Has anyone had successful experience with trading in + upgrading and can recommend a good vendor?

Funnily enough I want to do the exact same thing. I have contacted two well known companies (also valued PS vendors) and am waiting to hear back from them.

Out of curiosity, if you're willing to post, how much are they offering you in $$$s? It's definitely the right season to consider selling to a private buyer

I think a reset would be great! A halo or a 3 or 5 stone can do wonders.

Also as far as selling on LT, many people had sold fairly pricey items there to other pricescopers. There’s generally a good way to work it out to minimize risk. Where there’s a will there’s a way. I recently made purchases on 3k and 5.5k items which is small change compared to what a 3 ct diamonds go for. But everything went super smooth.

Is that term 'escrow'??

You've got me questioning my own memory now  lol

The quotes that I’ve gotten for my stone from the jewelers are all better than I expected, so I definitely won’t be doing a private sale :) The question I’m debating now is whether to 1) Sell current stone to jeweler and use the funds toward upgraded stone or 2) Keep current stone forever and wait another 1-2 years to buy a second stone

Has anyone ever regretted selling their original engagement ring/stone?

I would say if you can afford to keep it , def don’t sell ! Such sentimental Jewries hold a special value which cannot be replaced .
