Hi all,

I have been lurking here for a while and learning all about diamonds - stuff I knew nothing about when we got my engagement and wedding rings. Anyway, I have been trying to check out the HCA for my engagement ring diamond, but I can''t get it to work as the IGI Antwerp cert doesn''t give total depth. Now, I don''t think the results are going to be good (actually I think they will be awful) but I''ve had the stone for 2 years and it looks pretty good in real life, so I''m ok with that. I''d just like to know anyway, so if someone can tell me how to estimate the total depth from the cert details, I''d be interested to know. Here are the details:

D VS1 RB 0.5ct
4.97-5.02x3.20mm
Very slight fluor
Table diameter 58%
Crown height 15%
Pavilion depth 44.5%
Thin to medium girdle
Culet pointed

Thanks!

The total depth is the height of the diamond divided by the average diameter, so 3.2/5 = 64% total depth on yours.

Depth is 64.1%

Depth divided by the Averge Diameter Very simple.

Thanks! So as I expected, it gets a 5.4 on the HCA. So can you tell me what is wrong with this diamond? Is the crown height too high? too low? table too big/too small? I am interested to know!

If you wanted to give it some more kick the pavilion only could be repolished shallower. But if it is exactly 5ct, this would lessen its value for resale as 5ct is a worth more for naming rights. You would drop to around 4.80ct and loose about 15% of its value

I''m afraid it''s .5ct, not 5ct! I wish! Anyway, thanks for your reply - I assume that the same considerations apply regardless of size. I don''t actually want to do anything to this stone, just trying to educate myself as to what one looks for in these numbers to judge "performance"!
