Help with Estimated Value

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are looking for some assistance obtaining an estimated value for a pearl bracelet we own. The bracelet in question was given to her by her ex-mother -in-law approximately 25 years ago. We understand that those of you in the industry are inclined to be paid for your appraisal services and expertise. We aren't looking for a "certified" appraisal, just an off the cuff 'ballpark" number at what the bracelet might fetch out there based on the below description and photos.

We will not use this information in an attempt to sell the item. Appraisals can be a bit costly so we want to get an idea of it's potential worth before putting up a possible $200 for something that costs less. We truly appreciate your assistance and expert word.

Description
Pearl (natural pearls not round) set in 20 ct gold

Total Wt: 54 grams
Pearl Type: Freshwater
Pearl Count: 185 (182 set + 3 on clasp)
Pearl Origin: Presumably Dubai as the bracelet clasp indicates the it was made in Dubai
Pearl Size: Each measured at approximately .5cm (L) x 3-4mm (W)
Gold: 20 ct
Mfg'd Date: ca. 1970 (this is assumed at this point based on an auction house description of a very similar bracelet - see below)

It should be noted that my wifes ex-in-law's were Persian and traveled quite frequently to Dubai so there is little to no doubt as to the bracelets origin of purchase.

For your convenience, here is a link to a gallery of photos we have taken of the bracelet:

Also, in my own search for something similar, I actually found an auction site that had an almost identical type of bracelet in their possession back in 2007. I say almost identical because the outside edges of the bracelet in our possession are slightly different - more "swirly".

As you will note, they had an estimated value of $1500 but we don't know who set it's value. Nor if it was actually purchased at all. The company is in Australia so calling them is not an option and emails have gone unanswered. Here is a link to the auction catalog in question (it is item #1311) :

Once again we thank you in advance for your assistance and we look forward to hearing from you...

You can email Sotheby's auction house, and tell them that you are thinking of auctioning the piece. Send a link to the photos, or they may ask that you attach the photos so they don't have to click through to an unknown link. They will usually give you a ballpark auction estimate for free, they did that for my family with some paintings, years ago.

@iLander

Awesome...We'll give that a try. I'd like to give NacreLover's friend a chance to see what she comes up with first though.

PrNiner, I heard back from my friend. She wants you to post this same post over at another forum. This is part of what she said.

That is a great story and a most interesting bracelet. Can you have him post that entire letter on Pearl-Guide? Or post it for him? We have others who can comment, as well, like Dave. I am thinking about it, but haven't decided what to say- there is more than one possibility

Here is the link to PG so you can join and post. You may want to post it in the forum What kind of pearls do I have?

PrNiner. My friend over at Pearl Guide contacted me and is going to repost your beautiful bracelet over there. There are many pearl farmer, vendors and collectors from all over the world who can help you get the info you need. I will find the link so you can see the answers and post it here for you to see. I have no idea what they will come up with but I personally hope these are Persian Gulf pearls and this is worth $$$$$$$

PrNiner, Your bracelet is up at PG. I look forward to the replys it receives. http://www.pearl-guide.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7131

NacreLover,

My apologies for not having viewed or responded. I have been quite busy with work as of late.

I truly appreciate your friend's input and you for posting my description at perl-guide.com. I don't know if you have noticed but there have already been a few replies which is exciting. I will be creating an account to access the forum and post a reply to those individuals who have commented.

Based on what they say, it would seem that a $1500 est. price isn't too far off. I wonder though if it's antiquity, if you will, and seemingly rareness would boost it's value?

Something to think about...

Please apologize to your friend for the delay in my reply, for her time, and interest.

I will be sure to check this forum more often for any other interesting turns or information.

Warmest regards,

A & J

There are many members over at Pearl Guide who don't post all the time. It may take while for them to see your bracelet. Caitlin collects Persian gulf pearls and others there at the forum do know what they are looking at. I look forward to more thoughts on your incredible bracelet.
