Ok girls I am helping my best friend pick out a e ring for his girl friend (my best friend since I was a child). The budget is $6,000.00 dollars but here is the catch she does not want a diamond (to common for her)she really wants a blue or green sapphire in a custom plat setting. He has given me some pics from a jeweler of some sapphires he really like for the ring. Also can you believe the jeweler said that diffusion treated is actually preferred

And the final one a 4.34 ct 10.0 X 8.0 X 5.6MM. He also realy likes this one. Which one does everyone like? I know she does not want a round or an oval or a princess cut sapphire. Any help is welcome.

I like the 2nd one best, but that''s partly because my favorite color is green so the blue-green cushion speaks to me. If she wants a blue OR a green sapphire I hope she knows that green sapphires don''t look like emeralds. If he''s unsure what she means by a green sapphire, #3 would be by far the safest choice.

I like the 2nd and the last ones best!

How is he planning to set it?

When we were looking at settings she said she realy like this one.

Next favorite would be the 3.87 oval - wow, that''s a BEAUTY, too!

But I thought she didn''t want an oval?

Yes but the color is so beautiful that I know she would like it.

I actually like the first one best but they are all beautiful. You must post pictures when the ring is done!

I like #2...but think the 2nd to last (oval) would look killer with halfmoon sides..

Was it $6000 or $600... the budget?

I wonder if those charmers were not copied off Ebay - ya' know, the $.99 stating bid, no reserve auctions for 'royal blue Burma sapphire'?

The very blue cut rectangular stone could well be synthetic or something - looks funny. The others remind me of the grayish patchy colored material that gets Be treated. Now, there is a price for everything, but not 6k... hopefully.

I am not saying there is anything wrong with liking these stones for what they are, as long as the price is reasonable. Sorry to be such a grudge

How about THIS or THIS green (U42 at Arnstein's) or:

U117_1_th
U117, 2.7cts, Unheated, $1000

A fellow Pricescoper, Edward Bristol of gems of Earth came up with some nifty blues on his website lately: both sapphire and spinel. It may not be that easy to find princess cut sapphires, but there is one on his site - listed below next to a much larger blue spinel:

sp72-4.57.jpg
The princess cut sapphire is rather small... I wonder though if one of similar cut could not be found on order. I can't know how optimistic the color in the photos is relative to the person-to-gem impression, but these sure look great and Edward is here on call

This one below comes from Antoine Huang's 'Gems from Earth' site: 2.12 cts, unheated, less than 1k... and rather persuasive portrait

Pictures are just pictures, but with these two shops, the sellers are here to answer for the acuracy of their eye catching graphics.

Also, isn't there a sale for Richard Homer's gems running at Wink's ? Maybe one of the sapphires on call there could do the trick. This one below is blue spinel from Richard's website: I don't know if it is object of the sale... but if your friend is after a rarity, this is one. Spinel doesn't get this blue any more often than the moon does

These were blue OR green. If the preferred stone should be a mix of shades, that should call for an aqua blue - with an even blue-green color, or parti color sapphire - with patches of both. IMO, neither kind gets excused for color intensity - hence my lack of enthusiams with the graysh or dark ones (aca, much of the super inexpensive Ebay bunch).

There are some sapphires with almost aqua-blue color that are quite eye catching and unique gems. MJO mentioned one, but never showed it (or the source). If the idea sounds tempting, you or your friend could ask. The picture below shows pretty well the color I have in mind - I do not know anything about the gem in the picture (size, price) only that it is part of a Chinese sapphire miner's collection and web-based display of rare colors:

Hope none of this sounds out of place or unpleasant. All more so since I do like the parti-color sapphires for what they are and would not want to make believe these are bad in any way. It isn't my fault they are so inexpensive.

For example, in the first one you posted - the blue and green mark crystal growth beautifully: like a full color crystal map. I only wish I saw that one before it got cut!

Case in point:

14776V.jpg

4 carat parti-color sapphire, Bentlry&Skinner sponsor mark...

And one loose sapphires that matches somewhat at Arnstein's: U138 ( 2.5 cts, unheated, $500) and big brother (U 137, 3 cts, $1300)

U137_1_th

What I would expect to be hard to get in these sapphires is color - many parti color ones are very dark or muddy or graish. And even of the good looking ones, I wonder how many larger stones escape color treatment and get cut to show the mix of colors like this.

I like the 3.87 oval stone - the color is just beautiful IMHO!
