Well the time has come for me to propose soon and I have been spending a lot of time researching diamonds for my hopeful-to-be-fiance, while utilizing a lot of useful information from the forums here. So thank you. :)

I have lots of questions to ask as I learn more, but to start I''ve basically narrowed my decision to the following specs:

Round
0.90 carat
Cut grade - excellent
Color - E
Clarity Grade: - VS2
Polish - excellent
Symmetry - excellent

Or something like this:

My questions are:

1. Will this diamond look as a big as a 1 carat diamond? I figure if I get an excellent cut with well laid out proportions, that it would make it appear just as big and thus I could save a bit more money. The difference between a 0.90 and 1 carat size is quite a bit. Of course, I also want the diamond to exhibit as much light, fire, and scintillation as possible.

2. $4500 is really the most I''m looking to spend on the diamond itself and I''m planning to buy it online as brick and mortar stores are just too expensive in comparison. Most sites like Blue Nile, and Union Diamond seem to have this type of diamond price in the $5000-$5500 range. Is there any room for negotiation here? Is $5000-$5500 really a fair price for this type of diamond?

3. My fiance is window shopping for the type of band to mount the diamond on. We plan to take some pictures and then have the online diamond vendor find a similar band for us so we can have it all mounted on in one go. How much will the mounting fee cost? What other fees are there?

Any other suggestions or improvisations are welcome.

Having recently gone through the process and reading a lot of threads I would reccomend finding your setting firsts as this can turn out to be more difficult than selecting a diamond. Start by looking at PS vendor websites for settings compated to what you see in stores. Should you decide on a setting only found on a particular PS vendor site they can work with you to find you a diamond that meets your specs.

What is the range of specs you are looking at?

I''m basically looking for specs that would give me less than a 2 on the HCA score chart. The lower the better. Excellent all around would be awesome! My fiance and I talked about it and we do not want to give up the cut. The stone must absolutely shine in brilliance all around.

I thought VS2 was as far down as I could go without noticing blemishes with the naked eye. My fiance intends to show this thing off too and will be eyeballing it very closely, so any noticeable blemishes are a no go. If SI1 is good enough for the naked eye to avoid seeing blemishes, then I will consider it.

I would also be willing to drop down in carat size a bit too, say to .85 or so if that meant I could get a diamond with these specs and within my budget.

As for the setting, she''s looking for a gold (gold colored?) band with the really small diamonds on the sides. Most of the engagement rings I''ve seen are platinum, and not gold in color so I''m not sure exactly how the diamond will look on a gold band. Also, will a gold band give the diamond a more yellowish color since the light could reflect off it? If so, would a platinum band be better if it meant better clarity?

I gave JA as well as WF a shout to see if they can hunt down anything for me. I will post any pictures if they send them to me.

And also, my fiance did not not want a gold colored band (whew!!), she wanted a silver/platinum colored micro paved one. The thing is she wants it to be a really thin band, but she's worried that a 0.90 carat might be too big for it.

What is the thinnest size band possible and would a 0.90 carat diamond fit on that band?

The diamond should be fine for size and you can get thin micropave bands, sizes can vary.
