Hi everyone! Thanks for all the input on this site! You guys have already been extremely helpful!

I am looking for a 2.5 to 3ish Emerald Cut Diamond. I used many of the parameters I found on here and entered them a James Allen for 3 Carat.

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/3.01-carat-g-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-2744108

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/3.01-carat-d-color-if-clarity-sku-2402242

So when the search came back with these 2, I realized I do not know anything. Besides color and Clarity, what is driving the Huge price difference between these 2 stones? My budget is Low 40's for the stone and 50ish for the setting etc.

For setting I am considering something like this, but welcome opinions.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Take care,
Jim

It certainly has potential. My only concern is that when it is straight on it has a lot of facets turned
off (black). Can you get an aset?

I like the first Victor setting but if it were for me I would go all prong set instead of bezel.

I love the first setting! I think an emerald cut stone that size needs the 5 stone setting to balance

Wow, thanks everyone for the quick responses. Ty have you ever dealt with enchanted? I've never ordered a stone online & am bit apprehensive.
I tend to agree with 5 stone for balance. What do you consider ideal LxW for rectangular EC?

I would suggest asking GOG to help with your search. Their real life videos would be invaluable. I was just looking at ECs this week and they can vary so much, and you have to love it. For sure, you need an ASET. Worry about the setting later. And I agree I would do a five stone.

Actually you are correct that the color and the clarity are the major factors in the price difference.

Yeah as far as I can see it's just the color and clarity causing the price difference. The D-IF actually faces up a little smaller than the other one, and neither has fluorescence or obvious cut problems.

Dude no joke. For that much money, you need some IRL videos and a good return policy. THe stone looks nice. But whether it is better than any other for the $39k you are forking out, I would not feel certain. Have you watched the YouTube videos of GOG comparing emeralds side by side? I'm not saying you have to have GOG do that for you but that is the best way to choose a good one from any vendor. Unless the people here on PS have those videos or at least an ASET, we can't say for certain which is best. Or if possible ask a PSer in the neighborhood go check out the stone IRL. That has been done before.

I would only purchase from a place that provides a video, ASET and a solid return policy when it comes to ECs.

Trust me, I share all your concerns! It's my money, ha. Is there a dealer that specializes in EC or just one that you guys would recommend? I just sent an e-mail to GOG.

Thanks!

Contact GOG and we will go from there. Due to the size, not many vendors are able to provide you good options.

Besides GOG, I would also recommend IDJ for fancy cuts.

Yes, due to size, not many will have a very well cut EC. I would try IDJ. Missy is in NYC So she might be able to check it out for you if she is in the area. It think there are other PSers as well. If they present you with anything that is a serious contender just send out an SOS. I think pinto is out there as well. But GOG videos will be very helpful.

I know Missy is here and so am I! I've checked out a few stones for PB and others before and would be happy to do so if I can get away from work. PB is out in LI and could probably go to GOG....it's tougher for her to come into the city during the week.

Thanks so much! Sincerely appreciate the offer and If it comes to that there will be nice bottle of Vino coming your way ;)

A friend who knows I'm looking send me these. He is in no way an expert, just saw this & forwarded. What do you guys think? Anyone ever deal with this eBay seller?

Ok, gotta got but have to say. Since you haven't bought it yet, I can say I don't love it. It's not ugly, at all. But i've seen prettier emeralds. middle has too much darkness for my taste. It may be because of the lighting or that the stone isn't being tilted in enough angles to see more reflections, but if given what I've just seen, sorry. I would not choose it for $39K.

It doesn't rock my boat, unfortunately. Nice but not WOW nice for the price.

Cool. Appreciate the honesty. You all are awesome! And I am looking for "WoW" which is why I started this thread. I realized I needed help!!

If I may offer a bit of trade advice (I cannot comment on any specific diamonds) - while the numbers and ratios, etc. can be good starting points for preferences, it sounds to me like you are most concerned about light performance. The ASET that has been suggested is a really good way to set some of the diamonds apart from one another. While the Ideal-Scope is also helpful, I find the ASET to be invaluable when assessing light performance for fancy shapes.

With your budget, be as patient as you can - but move quickly when you find one you like. Request ASETs and post them here (especially if you find 2-3 you can compare) and you'll get great advice.

The proof in the pudding, however, is always how it looks in real-life so be sure about the return policies and associated "add-ons" from each vendor. You will, no doubt, come up with something stunning.
