Help! I've lurked here for a few months while getting up the nerve to buy an engagement ring.

I am thinking of purchasing this 2.03 emerald cut diamond at $15,300:

Report: GIA
Shape: Emerald
Carat: 2.03
Color: F
Clarity: VS1
Depth: 74.3
Table: 71
Girdle: TK
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Culet: None
Fluorescence: No
Measurements: 7.47-6.66X4.95
Length/Width: 1.12

SARIN REPORT PARTICULARS:
Weight: 2.030
Width: 6.64 mm
Length: 7.45 mm
L/W ratio: 1.12
Total Depth: 4.95 mm (74.5%)
Pavilion Depth: 3.89 mm (58.6%)
Crown Height: 0.79 mm (11.9%)
Table Size: 4.75 mm (71.5%)
Girdle Thickness: 0.25 mm (3.8%)
Culet off center: 2.4% (W:3.0%, L:0.1%)
Table off center: 0.05mm

The IDEAL SCOPE image looks very nice.

I don't expect perfection at $15K, but is it perhaps a bit thick, with the 2 carats looking a bit less than that? A little too boxy for the price?

Anything else I should be concerned about?

Any thoughts would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

Thanks, Dave

could you post the idealscope and a pic of the diamond itself?

I''m a hopeless luddite, but I will try very hard

I couldn''t figure out how to attach both in the same post, so here is the scope pic.

"Boxyness" represents 2 factors:

1) Personal preference (some like it more square)
2) The more boxy, the more likely you''re going to get a "windmill" effect (I read this on another website regarding ECs, so correct me if I misstated), which you can see here in your EC.

Depending on what others say about the IS, if you like the way the diamond "performs," then the L/W ratio shouldn''t be an issue for you...I''d be interested in hearing what others have to say as well...

I''m bringing this back up just in case anyone who would be willing to share their thoughts with me missed it. I really do appreciate any help at all. I''m thinking of purchasing this diamond today, and I''m as nervous as an Enron exec. at an IRS audit.

Hi David,
WARNING- I would excersice extreme caution on this one.
The price is simply too low.
It''s possible, but then you have to ask- why would a reputable seller of diamonds sell a desirable strone 25% below market?

If it is a real deal, it is a very good one.

Do you get any kind of return policy with this EC? Many places give you a 10-day or 30-day return policy, giving you enough time to obtain an independent appraisal...if this is the case, I would want to see this diamond up close and personal and get the 2nd appraisal.

The main reason is that your Depth is heavy, which may make the diamond look smaller than it really is. Also the Table is large, which, in person, may make the EC look glassy in person. I would want to see the diamond before making a final decision. If you have such a retun policy, then there''s no harm, no foul...if there isn''t I would consider walking away...

but that''s just me!

Thanks for the posts!

It''s a Whiteflash diamond and I learned about them by lurking here. So they do have a return policy and such. I will absolutely get it appraised myself, thanks for the suggestion. They have been great, of course.

Based on what I''ve heard, I''ll move forward.

Again, thank you for your help. This forum was a god-send when I first started looking at diamonds. To think I almost settled for a Shane Company ring...it makes me shudder!

Since DavidStarks has not mentioned the name of the seller... would you consider pointing out what might account for the relatively good price ? If anything shows in the images and numbers available, that is.

Just as an aside, this is the cheapest 2 carat F/VS1 Ec with a GIA listed here.

Just knowing that it''s w/ WF should put any worries to rest....if you don''t love this stone, I''m confident that you and they will find you the right one instead.

(Seriously--just SEEING "Shane Co." made ME shudder too!!)

It''s a chunky EC, but it could be gorgeous!!

Good luck and let us know what the appraiser says!!!

It''s really a good deal in my opinion... Personally I love chubby shapesand this one looks really great from the pics... it may be a tad on the deeper side, but the price may make up for it

I agree..knowing that it''s from a reputable dealer, I feel better for David as well. Let us know how it goes David and I''d still get the 2nd appraisal if your eyes/gut aren''t sure it''s THE STONE for you!

Can''t wait to see the live pix!!!

Hmmmm....
The PS database lists prices from $19,771 to about $21.5K for similar stones.
Why would this stone be so much less?

74.3% is at the deeper end of what you might want in an Emerald Cut- but it''s not a number that automatically disqualifies it- or a number that should make a diamond 25% below what other comperable stones sell for..

David Starks, have you actually talked with Whiteflash? I am wondering if the price could be a typo? It does happen occasionally.

I have talked to Whiteflash. The price is correct and I have purchased the stone.

You blokes are making me feel horribly self-satisfied. If the stone turns out like I hope, I will no doubt be an insufferable know-it-all and give sad, kindly looks to those who didn''t get such a good deal.

Again, thanks for all the help. I will certainly post back with the results.

Oh well, 2-2.1 cts, F, Vs1, GIA, depth 50-80, table 50-80 (trying to catch everything !) fills one page with quotes between 15k and 17k and there are no really extreme numbers in there this time (sometimes there are). The default table and depth limits are narower and sometimes correspond to higher quotes
