Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a diamond engagement ring for my significant other (hopefully soon to be fiance)! I've done a good amount of research over the past few weeks on diamond characteristics and have found one through an online vendor that could be a contender, but wanted to ask all you experts here on your opinions.

The diamond I'm looking at is a round brilliant cut. It has a GIA certificate that lists 0.76 carats, E color, VVS1 clarity, and excellent cut. The GIA certificate also lists excellent polish, excellent symmetry, no fluorescence, and mentions "Pinpoint" for the inclusion. The inclusions seems to be 1 small white pinpoint on the crown off to the side (but not on the table), and a 2 smaller pinpoints on the side of the diamond (I think on the pavilion) that you can sort of see through the crown if you turn it the right way (but again not through the table). The vendor has assured me that you can only see them under magnification and that it is eye clean.

I ran the proportions through HCA to get an idea for how good the cut really is, and I got a 0.9 score with excellent light return, fire, and scintillation, and very good spread. The exact proportions are as follows:
56% table
62.1% depth
35.0 crown angle
40.6 pavilion angle
no culet
medium to slightly thick girdle, faceted (4.0%)
15.5% crown height
43.0% pavilion depth
50% star length
75% lower girdle facet length
measurements: 5.81-5.84 x 3.62mm

My questions are as follows. As I understand it HCA assumes medium (1.2%) girdle and symmetric measurements. Does the fact that this diamond has a much thicker girdle (4.0%) than that reference point and is not perfectly round (5.81-5.84mm) impact the cut materially? That is to say, will light return, fire, and scintillation be impacted a lot? Does the fact that the girdle is faceted impact anything either way? What would you guys assume is a reasonable price for a comparable diamond? Lastly, overall do you think that this would be a good purchase for an engagement ring?

Thanks in advance!

You don't want the average girdle thickness of 1.2%. It is too thin. 4.0% is just fine, as long as the depth is less than 62.3%, which it is. 5.81-5.84mm is reasonable spread for 0.75c diamond.
0.03mm deviation in diameter is just fine as well. That's normal. The girdle being faceted is normal and non-issue.
All numbers are fine and even spectacular.

If you can get it around $4~4.5k, that would be reasonable

But with that budget, I would try to get 0.9 G/H VS to push it beyond 6.0mm and closer to 1ct, unless you and your partner have strong preference for a high clarity/color combo.

Hi, thanks for the help! I had been thinking of trying to get up to 0.9 carat, but my partner actually prefers a smaller size in the 0.7 range since she has very small hands (3-3.25 ring size). This diamond is selling for $5.1k so a little higher than the price range you found. Is that too much or still within the realm of an okay deal?

Also, I did some more reading on these forums tonight and it seems like a lot of people recommend still getting an ASET or Idealscope image to confirm the light return, etc. that the numbers indicate. Should I try to ask the vendor for one or both?

I would not pay $5.1k for 0.75 E VVS, when I can get 0.8 F VVS/VS Whiteflash's ACA

If you prefer something colorless and mine-clean clarity, expand your search to include F color and VS1 (or even VS2)
VVS is an overkill, and only limits your research results.

Definitely ask for the IS/ASET image and the actual photo. I require, at least, a very well taken photo, if no IS/ASET. The photo is a must.IS or ASET is good enough. If you can get both, that's just nicer.
