3 weeks ago and my fiance gave me a 1.5 carat cushion cut solitare (4 prong setting). a few days ago i noticed the stone was loose. I took it back to the jewelers for tightening and was told me it should have been set in a 6 prong setting, that the setting wasn''t right for it.

annoying b/c my fiance just asked for a solitare and they put it in this platiunum setting for him (idea being keep it simple so i can pick out what i want). she said it was just going to keep getting loosened and i really needed 6 prongs. i thought ok she must be right well now i''m thinking - i have never seen a cushion with 6 prongs.

my belief is they probably set the stone in a 4 prong setting that wasn''t right for it. also --- once their repair guy tightened the prongs they were jutting up way above the stone like they hadn''t done before and it looked terrible. i want to just go and tell them to shave down the prongs where their guy "fixed" it --- they are about 3mm above my stone now.

So my question --- what is really going on here? are they idiots? can anyone help me with what i should tell them?
I am not ready to choose another setting altogether, and honestly right now i really like the way the simple solitaire looks.

This seems weird to me. There are plenty of 4 prong settings of cushions your size on PS. In fact, I would not want a 6 prong myself - would seem to detract from the shape of the stone.

Just got off the phone with someone else at the jewelers. They said the stone was improperly set in a princess basket which was why it came loose - the basket wasn''t deep enough. They need to order a cushion basket and set it correctly in that. They said they wouldn''t set a cushion in a 6 prong setting.

I should not take everyone at their word

Thanks for the replies this was making me crazy.

A cushion shaped diamond can be firmly set in 4 rather wide prongs or in what we''d call "split-prongs" which are these 4 wide prongs split in half into 8 narrower ones. What has to happen is that some pressure is on both sides of the radius of the 4 corner curved ends of the diamond. This will prevent it from revolving and becoming loose. You could do it with 6, but it is not nearly as attractive to the eye.

I''ve never seen a cushion with six prongs...it doesn''t make sense to me how that would work...
