Hello everyone. First post on here so go easy on me :D

I'm looking for an engagement ring on a budget: $2000 CAD all in. I'm about to finish up university so funds are a bit tight, but I can push it to 2000 before taxes+duties, etc if I find a knockout deal. I've been doing some basic research on my own, and this is what I came up with so far. The customer service guy on James Allen couldn't really put together a better combo himself at my budget (the automatic diamond selector on the website did a pretty good job I think) but I'd like to hear a second, third, fourth opinion and so on! Basically I already knew going in that my soon to be fiance's preference would be princess cut with a more simple setting like solitaire, so I tried to put together the best combo I could:

Can I do better for the price? (Total around $1600, estimated to be about $1805 all in). For slightly more is there anything better I could do? The customer service reps showed me some options for $300 more but had the same diamond specs, main differences was clarity - VVS1 instead of my selection of VS2 (which according to them wouldn't be noticeable anyways). But at the same time I've read that specs don't necessarily mean the diamond won't be a dud. So I'm kind of stumped there because I don't know how to determine that. Not sure if the depth/table of the diamond I chose is good, I read elsewhere that one should look for a higher depth than table for princess cut, but I don't know if the depth is too much here. The depth/table information seems to be a bit more clear-cut for round diamonds, as opposed to princess where the numbers are all over the place and wide-ranging depending on the source I choose. Not sure what to make of the other more advanced numbers either, just tried to go with the four Cs for now. And with the choices currently being online, I don't know how to assess how good it would look visually in person.

Also, did I make any inherently "bad" selections/choices that don't go well together? Sounds like a silly question but this is all still really new to me. Would the 0.55 look disproportionately small on a 2mm setting? Haven't really shopped much in person to see what kind of difference a bigger carat would make. Obviously budget is the limiting factor here though.

Thank you so much in advance! All your input would be greatly appreciated.

I can't speak to a princess cut but have you tried to find an eye clean S1? Also, knife edge isn't to my taste-- it would be a tad thick for me personally at 2mm. How about: https://www.jamesallen.com/mobile/e...d-15mm-comfort-fit-engagement-ring-item-22606

I have this setting and it's very sturdy and will really let the 1/2 carat shine. I know it's a tad more expensive but you can get around $100 off for mentioning Pricescope i think. So it's $330, and for me it would be worth it. Sorry the link is mobile.

Did you pick princess or did she? Most people either really like them or dont like them at all.
Here is a relative size of your stone on a 2mm band on a size 6 finger. A round would face up
bigger but a round would also cost you $1200-1300. You could go down to a J in a round
since your budget is a bit tight.

Thanks for all the replies.

Princess cut is her preference. Not sure how adamant she is on staying with the cut but I figured it'd be safer to just stick with it for now.

All along I've kind of been a bit worried that the 0.55 carat is a bit small, so I was wondering if it would be more "worth it" to try to save up for a bit longer and really stretch my budget to get a diamond like this:

It's not a VS2 but looks "eye clean" to me. Would the added size be worth saving up a bit longer for?

Only you can answer that question-- Does your gf care about diamond size? Would she rather have a great performing stone over a larger one? I have seen 1/2 carat diamonds on slender fingers (size 4-5.5) and with thin settings (1:5 mm) and I think they look very dainty and beautiful.

An unsolicited suggestion...

Others can chime in on the merits of the diamond itself, but I'm loving this and think it would make for a very sweet engagement ring. I think (and I could be wrong!) that this also may be an older item of stock, so it might also be worth calling and asking if there is any wiggle room on the price...

All the best with your decision <3
