I am moving this post to RockyTalky. I recently upgraded my e-ring to a dreamy David Klass OEC and I am thinking about antiquing the scroll work when I get it sized. I've never done this before and am afraid I'll ruin the setting. I'm all ears for any feedback, pics, experience so please share!

It sort of looks antiqued in the picture but I think it's the lighting/shadows. Sorry, it's not the greatest camera.

If you'd like to get a sense of what a black, antiqued low field will look like behind the scroll work on the shoulders of your engagement ring body, the easiest method is to go over the engraved area with a fine point Sharpie marker. Let the ink dry for a moment and gently massage the inked area with an alcohol wipe. A dot of isopropyl alcohol on paper towel or a Q-tip or a felt pad will work as well. Don't saturate the wipe and don't push much (Scrub). If you work gently / patiently, you will expose the high points of the engraving with the dark field intact.

To clean the Sharpie marker off of the piece, a toothbrush or paper towel, Q-tip etc. saturated with isopropyl (household) alcohol and a more aggressive wiping motion will remove all of the marker. You won't destroy the ring surface with any of these solutions.

I used a blue marker to indicate the position of the laser inscription of a diamond while working with a client one day. The diamond had appraised higher than expected and I had to explain that I din't mess it up for life.

It won't ruin the setting - and it's very easy to get removed if you don't like it.

@MWM
Thank you, I'll give the Sharpie a try!

I‘ve used whiteboard markers to test things like this ... much easier to remove after seeing ‘the look’.

Firstly, your ring is amazing! I'm going to go check your other threads in a moment to see if you have done a SMTB thread!

Secondly, if you try out the Sharpie technique, perhaps you could share a picture of how it turns out?
