Help! So Confused in Purchasing 2 Ct Diamond Online

I need some help and expert opinions.

I currently have a 1 ct Round Brilliant solitaire but our 10 year is coming up and we would like to upgrade. I ideally would like to go big - as in 3 ct big - but we were thinking of purchasing a 2 ct round brilliant online and upgrading in a year or two to a 3 ct with the upgrade policy.

I have so many questions:

1. I am completely comfortable with the warmer colored diamonds and honestly feel better with a K diamond as I really do not appreciate the difference in daily life. But how do I choose the right diamond? I want something that is eye clean, but really nothing more than that. How do I go about finding that?

2. When I look at pictures online they all start to look the same to me. What should I be looking for? What should I stay away from? Is SI1 okay? What about SI2? Or should I stick with VS1? What else do I need to look for when looking at these pictures/selecting a diamond?

3. I would love to stay in the $10K price range for now and upgrade in a year or two to something that is in the $20-25k price range. I would really like to get the largest diamond for that price. I have primary been searching online on James Allen as their website is very easy to use. Has anyone ever had problems with their upgrade policy?

Any and all help is so much appreciated.

Thank you, thank you!

If I knew I was going to upgrade again that quickly I would just wait. But if that's not a possibility then I would go with a vendor that has a gangbusters upgrade policy, like Whiteflash.

Are you hoping to trade in your current diamond and then kick in another $10K? If not, I think that budget is going to be tough for a nice 2ct stone.

I am not opposed to trading in my current, but I do not know how that works with an online purchase.

At this point I just really do not know how to tell a good diamond vs something that is not good.

msop04 - Yes, thank you!! How can you that it is eye clean?

Not msop4 but zoom it out to either 1x or 2x and see if you can see the inclusions on your monitor. That usually translates quite well to how likely it will be to be eye clean when you're wearing it (always dependent on your eyesight of course!). There isn't a standard definition of eyeclean but the most common one seems to be at a distance of ~10 inches
The closeup zoom is HUGE so can make many inclusions look pretty scary

I did not realize you could do this. That is very helpful.

I echo what @mrsgreeneyes said above... if you’re buying a new stone and planning to upgrade in a year or so, Whiteflash or HP Diamonds is really worth looking into for their fantastic upgrade policies long-term.

However, I understand wanting to get the largest stone for the budget. I had initially purchased my round from JA last March and by August I was ready to go bigger. lol. Since I wouldn’t have gotten the size I was after switching vendors, I went back to JA. I’ve upgraded two different stones through them now and they were both great experiences.

The stone @msop04 linked is the best they have atm within your budget - I’d have their gemologist confirm it’s eye-clean and also request an idealscope image.

Just took a quick look at Whiteflash, I found this within your budget:

If your budget is at all flexible, you can get close to 2ct

The great news is, these are all super-ideals and you don’t need to wonder about cut performance. More importantly, when you’re ready to upgrade, you won’t have to spend double - the diamond only has to be valued more than your existing one.

at JA, to upgrade, you will need to spend double.
