Hi

do you think this diamond is a good price for £8,500 set in a halo ring- GIA Number 6192508399.

I am looking for a D/E/F - VS2/SI1 round stone set in a halo ring with a matching band. I am located in London.

I am really struggling to understand the GIA certificates in terms of feathers,cloyds,needles etc.

could any one give me some advice about what not to look for in a ring and for my budget of $8,500 what is a realistic expectation re size ?

Although there are a myriad of combinations of angles and degrees which will produce optimal light return in a round brilliant ideal cut diamond, you can narrow the field of possibilities and dramatically improve your chances of successfully selecting a gorgeous diamond by keeping the proportions of the diamond within the center range of the spectrum for the ideal cut proportions rating. We consider the center range to be as follows:

Total depth between 59 – 61.8%
Table diameter between 53 – 58%
Crown angle between 34.3 – 34.9 degrees*
Pavilion angle between 40.6 – 40.9 degrees
Lower girdle facets between 75 – 78%**
Star facets between 45 – 50%***
Girdle thickness between thin and slightly thick
Culet: AGS pointed or GIA none

If it's a GIA excellent, they have a broad range. I'd still run its numbers through the Holloway Cut Adviser (HCA) under the Tools tab on this page, upper right. Look for a sore 2 or less. It's just a rejection tool, and .8 is not necessarily better than 2. The chart it makes will show you where the diamond falls in the GIA Ex / AGS 0 range.

Inclusions: GoodOldGold.com has information on inclusions. SI1 is generally supposed to be eye clean from the top view. At what distance is always a question to ask, because vendors differ on that. Eyeclean at 7" is a more stringent requirement. Eyeclean from the side is not addressed in the grading, so you'd have to ask the vendor whether or not inclusions are visible from the side. Same for eyeclean when the diamond is tilted and viewed at an angle.

White or clear crystal inclusions hide better than dark ones. This is just my opinion, but I believe that any inclusion that crosses an arrow shaft or arrowhead is more likely to be seen. Again, just my opinion, but inclusions that are in the white circle around the culet will also tend to be visible under some lighting conditions. Arrows are alternately fire and brilliance (white), not black. Scrutinize anything that crosses or lies over an arrow because it might stand out when the arrow is reflecting white light.

Price, I can't say. I haven't been tracking prices.

Color: In that size of diamond, you could probably look at G and H. I have owned a 7mm G super ideal H&A, and it was very, very white, even from the side. I think that G and maybe even H would be suitable unless you have a requirement of colorless.

If I'm doing this right, you're looking at about 13000 USD. A 1.0 ct D-E VS1 would eat up most of that budget without a setting or wedding band, so you'll need to go down in color a bit to get the center stone size you're looking for in the setting you want. Many people consider F-G-H to be perfectly acceptable colors for center stones. (I do realize you might not be among those people, but... if you're not sure, consider going to a jewelry store that will allow you to compare diamonds of different color grades, so you can see the differences and assess your own sensitivity to these slight variations in color.) You can use PS's diamond search feature to get an idea of color, size, cut, and clarity will affect diamond price. Of course, if you're looking to buy locally might also be constrained by what's available locally, unless you can find a jeweler who's willing to call stones in for you.
