E9DCA6C1-D59F-435D-88E7-5972B5E8BAD1.jpeg Hi all, there’s this diamond going up for auction tomorrow. It’s a princess cut, slightly unpopular now I know, and it’s an M colour with VVS2 clarity. Comes with a GIA report. I’ll loupe it at the inspection. At what price do you think this would be an excellent buy? It’s a general household auction held locally and I doubt if there’ll be a heap of diamond experts there (though it’s possible a newbie punter will go Gaga over its size) but I’m tempted to have a go. Thoughts anyone ? Many thanks.

Hi Bron357,
In just about every case, a poorly cut stone is expensive at any price. This stone just squeaks in under 80% depth.
Now, it's not possible to "buy by the numbers" in terms of selecting a stone.
I'd even make the argument against rejecting certain fancy shapes that are outside "suggested ranges" for table and depth.
But this is a deep diamond by any standard.
If you fall in love with the stone, and want to keep it forever, it might present a nice value, and it might face up in a pretty and pleasant manner- in spite of the depth.
But if you ever did go to sell it, it's going to be much harder to find a buyer- or buyers will decimate you on price.
I'd use the PS diamond search function and see what the prices are for similar stones. You're likely to see a trend of deep stones going for lower prices than stones in the mid- low'70's
In any event, see what it would cost to buy one from a vendor, and use that in your calculations if you do end up bidding.
Based on buying it in a household auction ( garage sale?) if you were to buy it, you'd have a lot more risk than buying from an established vendor- so I'd expect to pay a price far lower than the internet selling prices.

Hope this helps!!

I'd go SUPER lowball, though I don't know what amount. But to give you context, my 1.7 carat round diamond had greater width than that 4 carat diamond. I know it's not apples to apples since they're two different shapes, but width is width...

Thanks. I found a 4,01 deep princess for around $20,000 Aust. It is F colour but S12 clarity. I think people will be put off my the M colour. Either there will be people there with no diamond knowledge apt to go crazy over its size, or there’ll be diamond people who won’t like the depth and M colour or there’ll be little interest. If there’s little interest, I’ll be in like Flynn. I figure under $8,000 is a good buy :appl:

is $10000 your max?

I don’t need or want a 4 carat princess particularly, but I’ll be darned if I’ll let anyone else take it home for less than $10,000. It would make a nice pendant me thinks.

good luck! let us know what you get it for! I'll think "$4000" thoughts for you ;)

I think I'd be interested in it as a recut candidate if the price went super low, because I don't like modern cuts in colors that low. But maybe it could be recut into a beautiful asscher and get rid of that excessive depth.

.
To me, it would be an expensive rescue mission, resulting in a nice something
+/- TWO CARATS, L-M, VS/SI

Inasmuch, 8K is ALLOT

I kept thinking of this - potentially beautiful - monster ... My previous post is quite unfair ! I am certainly not against X00% deep diamonds, or square ones. The few numbers on the GIA report may well correspond to a bright object [ e.g. 79 / 71 ]

... just the princess cut & I ! [sugarloaf diamond cut]

____
... playing with relative prices - via some discount for not-round, or M over K within the weight range ... I end up around 13K - for what it doesn't matter

You have a Suluki??? Pretty rare to see them. I grew up with Borzois--the classic couch potato.

Although a “show dog” we are a pet home so she was desexed. We do however do Lure Coursing with her ie running around a huge paddock chasing a plastic bag on a wire.

Love it. All our borzoi were field champs in lure cross. Silkenswift kennel bred all. Sight hounds are truly a gorgeous thing in motion.

Interesting!

Or a frenchie/peruzzi..........

Well, I went to the viewing, it’s actually quite a nice looking diamond, facetting very crisp. However, the vendor is hoping for at least $35,000 !
Hmmmm.

.
Oh, Arya !

::)

Perhaps a dog collar ? ;)) The diamond is large enough to enjoy from dog-leap lengh !

Re. diamond - the bad photo shows allot of contast [dark flecks - which, I know will dance away into fireworks as the diamond moves even slihtly .-] ... whch never sems to go wrong in princess cuts.
