The hole that you refer to in antique cut pears is not a hole. It is a flat facet called a culet. It's found in varying sizes in old European cuts and antique cut pears. It doesn't go away. My diamond has one but it is such a sparkle bomb that I rarely notice it. But check with your fiancee because the culet does really bother some people.
When you are looking at pears, choose one where the rounded end is shaped the most like a round brilliant cut to lessen the bowtie and have the sides flow smoothly into a point with no dips or bulges. Watch it move. you want the facets to turn on and off over as much of the surface and tip as possible to avoid mushiness. Mushiness is the area on a pear or oval that doesn't turn on and off it's just dead space.
If we're talking trucks, I used to own a 454 big block. It was set up to tow all the good toys at highway speed. It could pass everything but a gas station. Here is my antique pear(8 x 6mm) on a size 6 finger. They give really great finger coverage.
