Hello Everyone. I am new to the forums but have been doing a decent amount of research into the topic. I am looking to buy a cushion cut diamond ring. I am not looking for a crushed ice look and would prefer old miner's cut but I can't really find any that I love in my price range. I am looking for around .8-1 carat diamond. My budget is about $6k all in (diamond and setting). I have attached three diamonds that I have been looking at from James Allen below but am not stuck with any particular shop and am very open to suggestions. I have also linked the setting that I have found that is closest to what is looking for. I think I will need to go to a local jeweler and get it custom made however because I don't want the additional side diamonds and I want the setting to braid but with just the white gold not a diamond set braid. Any help would be appreciated and if anyone knows a quality jeweler online that would be able to make the setting that would also be appreciated. If this isn't the right place to post these type of questions please move it to the correct forum. Thanks so much for everyone's help!

Thank you so much! That first stone that you linked is gorgeous! In regards to the setting I am thinking about that infinity that you posted but with the two sapphire pears like in what I posted. Do you think its wise to buy a loose diamond and get it set at a local jeweler or should I just rely more on getting it set at the same place?

If you're going for a custom setting, please don't use your local place unless they are WELL known for their custom work. Most here would say to skip the local place altogether but my custom setting just so happens to have been done from a local place that has great reputation for custom work.

ANyway, back to stones, here are a few more:

Might be pushing the budget if you go with a custom setting:

so onto the setting. I think you're not finding anything like it because it's a pretty busy look. ANd for a smaller stone, two sapphires flanking it, in MY opinion, it's going to detract from the stone. plus an infinity band.. it's a lot going on. here is a 3 stone on JA with an infinity band (with pave).

like i said, a busy look and now imagine the side stones as sapphires. Is there a reason behind the sapphires? i kinda feel you should go with either sapphire side stones or braided shank, not both. again, just my opinion.

do you know what your intended prefers?

I know she likes the sapphires because of the blue that it incorporates. I think that is more important to her then the braided shank but I am not entirely sure. I really like the 2nd stone that you sent this time but obviously with price I feel like that would be difficult. Do you think the difference in fire between the JA one that you had sent and the August Vintage one is worth the extra $1.6k? I'm not really too knowledgeable about what the in-person difference would be as I have done most of my shopping online.

Ok, the stones. All of the ones i linked are August Vintage stones, it's only recently that Johnathan has made the August Vintage stones available through James Allen. I actually like the one available on JA, it's a nice size, color and clarity and i am not sure i would pay $1600 more for the minimal size difference which is like 6% face up. comparison of the .85 H VS2 (left) and .93 H VS2 (right)

this is with a 2mm band on a size 6 finger

on to the setting. the thing with sapphires... you can always do a sapphire wedding band or incorporate sapphires in the wedding band somehow.

Does your intended have a pinterest you can post some pics of? Would really help in suggesting someone for the setting as well as helping you decide exactly what you should lean toward on the settimg. CVB has BEAUTIFUL work, leaning more vintage and can be pricey... David Klass is another good choice and very reasonable.

What about a custom solitare with a simple infinity or braided band and inset two small sapphires in the lower basket of the setting, one on either side. It wouldn't be visible when viewing top down but she would see the sapphires a lot of the time due to it being in the profile.

Sadly she does not have a Pinterest to help out. I have probably thought more about the ring she wants then she has! I really like the idea of having the sapphire incorporated into the wedding band. I'm going to reach out to JA to see if they can provide the gemologist report on that diamond but I really like it. She liked this but thought the band was too boring.

I personally like the additional diamonds in this one and think it helps make the band look nice and then the sapphires could be on the wedding band. She is a nurse so its not like she will be wearing the engagement ring all the time anyway.

I live right outside of Philadelphia so I was going to go into the city to the two top rated places down there and look at their custom work to get an idea if it would work any better then what I have found online. I'm also going to send a message to the two vendors you have mentioned. Thanks for all of your help it has been extremely appreciated!

The perimeters on your search on JA are all wrong for a nice performing cushion. I would stick with the AGS Ideal stones that show the ASET on the certificate...like the one posted above. A J color with ideal light return will also face up very white.
This one is quite a bit larger but a little above your budget. When you set the wider side E/W you get some nice finger coverage. These on JA are cut like the AVC's that are disco balls and you can't go wrong no matter which color you go with.

You can compare at www.augustvintageinc.com
Well, I guess Jon has some of his stones also listed on JA...HA!
Same stone here:

OK will do thank you. I just got the proportions off of some random site so I'll just narrow it down by the AGS certified diamonds. Thank you for the information very helpful!

These could be sapphire sides or melee.

Also, maybe Montana sapphire blue-green melee would suit?

GREAT suggestion from @rockysalamander on the Maevona settings! :appl: They are stunning and so unique. and DEFINITELY puruse the Instagram page, the CAD photos on their site really don't do justice to the settings. the one rocky posted looks just meh on their website.... I think that setting would be beautiful with sapphire melee

thought i'd post some modern cut cushions too if you wanted to go a bit bigger.
