So, just a little background…my gf and I have been together for a little over 9 years now (long time, I know), 4 of which were in college and two living in different cities. But I’ve gotten to the point where I’m ready to do it, but I don’t want to overpay at the same time.

So, I went to Jared’s a couple of weeks ago, just to look and ended up walking out of there with a ring, that I wasn’t planning on buying. But thanks to the 30-day return policy they were able to talk me into it so I could “take some time and think about it, but at least you won’t have to worry about risking it not being available”.

I want to get a setting with side stones and a princess cut center, and I wanted to stay under $6000 total. Also, since I don’t just have that kind of cash sitting around, I was hoping to finance it, so that’s one of the things that made Jared’s appealing.
The diamond ended up costing $4500, and I was a little shocked since when I was looking at James Allen, I was seeing the whole ring and diamond of comparable size and quality for less than just the diamond cost at Jared’s. Then I came across pricescope, unfortunately after my purchase, and I’ve learned a heck of a lot in just reading for the last couple of days. So I’m coming to you guys/gals for a little help.

As far as the online vendors, which ones offer decent financing options?
Also, how does the cleaning/maintenance of the diamond work with buying online? I know Jared’s you just bring it to the store every 6 months and they take care of it on site.
Also, even though I’ve read a bunch of stuff, I still don’t quite get some of the other qualities…what should I be looking for, as far as, depth, table, crown height & pavilion depth, to get the diamond that going to look the best?
Finally, any recommendations for princess cuts that are in the ¾ ct range would be helpful. From what I’ve read, I think I’m going to go with the highest cut grade, something in the H-F color, and VS2-SI1 clarity.

Here are the specs for the Jared’s diamond:
It’s their Solafera princess cut, which is supposed to be their best cut diamonds.
IGI/Gemex Certs
H color
VS2 clarity
.72 ct
Some of the other specs:
Polish – very good
Symmetry – very good
Depth – 75.7%
Table – 59%
Crown Height – 14.0%
Pavilion Depth – 57.5%
Fluorescence – None

Sorry for the long first post, but any help is appreciated. I never knew that there was so much that was involved in choosing diamonds.

ooh I did not know Jared's carries Solasferas! Those are beautiful princess cuts, Good old Gold also carries those. As far as financing I am not sure about what other vendors offer financing. Other vendors who have top quality princess cuts are GOG, Whiteflash, Brian Gavin Diamonds, and High Performance Diamonds/Nice Ice (both of those carry crafted by infinity brand). With James Allen unless you find an AGS0 you have to do some more weeding through the inventory and request ASET images.

As far as cleaning/maintenance most places will do a simple cleaning for free. They will charge a small fee for more involved cleaning. I am not sure about the cost of rhodium plating, but I'm sure someone else would know!

Here are some other princess cuts in the 3/4 carat range...

I know Brian Gavin Diamonds has something where you have to apply a citi credit card and you pay over 6 months

I am skeptical about the name Solasfera being the same, because I know GOG's Solasferas come with a GIA report and not IGI lab report. Makes me think that may be a Jared brand name???

But thank goodness you found PS before your return period is up! GOG. WF, and BG all carry excellent diamonds and I have dealt with all three of them! I think Good Old Gold has 6 month interest free financing and I guess interest starts after that.

You should have a local jeweler wherever you live to do things like change watch batteries, do repairs, cleaning etc. I clean and check my ring myself and rarely ever take it to a jeweler for that. It's good maybe to choose a nice jeweler and buy an inexpensive item such as earrings to begin establishing a relationship. People move around, so there's no guarantee that anyone will stay in the came city they bought the e-ring anyway.

Good luck with your search!

I am pretty skeptical about it being a Solasfera... that would be very interesting news but to my knowledge the "ideal" that Jared's offers in Princess cuts is their "Peerless" cut which is AGS000, very nice stones and one of the only B&M stores I know of that you can see a bunch of AGS0's. Solasfera is a whole other type of branded princess cut and it wasnt mentioned to me when I was there and I would have loved to see one in person (I ended up with a GOG Signature princess and my Fiancee couldn't be happier). I was going back and forth between Solasfera and some top end AGS0's, but they didnt have the size/color I was looking for from Solasfera. My time at Jared's showed me that in their "Peerless" princess you were looking at a 40-50% premium over the online Whiteflash ACA's and GOG signature stones, it scares me to think what they would charge for a Solasfera.

If it really is a Solafera I would be very happy because then I could do see a side by side comparison in person, let me know, it has the type of Table/Depth that is consistent with their "Peerless" brand but also could fit the specs of the Solasfera's I have seen online. Although the Solasferas I have seen at GOG have generally had tables under 50% (that may just be the ones they like better though)

Yes, I think you might have the name of the diamond you bought at Jared's wrong, since solasferas have GIA reports not IGI, and I cannot imagine the brand would go with IGI which is so low in reputation.

It also only has VG polish and symmetry, the table is too large and depth too much. I am thinking not the solasfera we know and love!

Thanks for the info. I went and returned the ring to Jared's during my lunch break, so I can now start from scratch and look at a number of places.

As far as the Solasfera thing...That's what it said on the folder and certificate. Then also, when I was in Jared's they had a poster up saying that the Solasfera diamonds are their ideal ideal cut. I'm pretty sure at least, could be a different spelling or something, wish I'd taken a pic of the cert. But if you guys have a Jared's near you, I'm sure they have the same kind of signage, maybe someone can confirm/deny it.

So, the guides for the different table sizes and pavilion angles, etc. Do they apply for princess cuts as well, or just round diamonds? I was trying to put the specs of that princess cut diamonds into the HCA, but it kept saying depth is too large, before I realized it said for round diamonds.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I came across this site. Like I said, I never would've guessed the amount of stuff that goes into selecting a good diamond.

Herer are some AGS princess cuts from JA, I would request asset images, they will also have their gemologist look at up to three for you to see which one is the best. :appl:
