Help! Opinions on a green sapphire please?

Hi there,

I feel silly even posting this because I've seen SO many posts warning about Natural sapphire co. but I was wondering if it would be possible for people to give feedback on this green sapphire? I've been eyeing it for over a month whilst it was on hold with somebody else, and I couldn't help purchasing it to at least check it out in person as I find the dark green so beautiful. I've been looking for months now and this is the only one that really kept speaking to me.

I had my 15th fairly major arm surgery at the start of December and have spent 3 months so far in a cast from wrist to bicep, so drooling over stones for a pretty ring in time for my 30th birthday has been the only thing keeping me vaguely sane!

Again, I know I probably should have avoided NSC (they keep luring me in with the white glove videos!), but am I crazy in thinking it's not a bad deal for the size/color/cut?

Thank you in advance for all your much more experienced opinions, I love lurking on here!

Over 1k/ct for a heated dark green sapphire seems high.
Keep in mind stones tend to darken up once set.

Don't know anything about this seller but I came across this sapphire.
Unheated, 2ct, 450$.

Agreed the NSC stone is too expensive, it’s also got a window in the middle of the stone. demantoidz’s suggestion is a way better buy.

If you are looking for green sapphire or open to Parti sapphire with green component, below vendor May have something for you.

So sorry about the arm surgeries -- speedy recovery!

Faces up large so that "helps" the price, imo -- it "passes" for a heavier stone. It looks olive in the plane of the girdle (dichroic) but a nice forest green through the table.

It sounds like you are saying, "I know I don't trust this vendor but I wanna trust them for just this one thing and just this one time." I am not sure what to say to that... Plus: you imply that it has already disappointed someone else recently.

Must it be a sapphire (like, for daily wear) or are you open to other stones of similar color? This one is not as vivid as a nice tourmaline -- but harder, of course, and probably "sparklier."

Hello @crashsle, I just wanted to stop in and say that I hope you're on the mend for good now... and happy birthday! It certainly sounds like you've earned a reward, my friend.

If you end up loving the stone in person, and the price works for you, go for it! Yes, the NSC has earned a bad rap for some issues in the past, and deservedly so. But I've never heard of them actually misrepresenting any of their stones. (Although, I do tend to think they're a bit generous with their pad designation.) In any event, I purchased 2 sapphires from the NSC, and was very happy. No doubt they have some very fine stones. I also purchased a ruby, and was not happy with it. The return went very smoothly. So fear not! Good luck!!

Thank you! The face up was what was really appealing and you've summed up the color perfectly! I was aiming for an olive or forest green but was struggling to pinpoint it, I think this one hits right between the two.

I think the NSC warning was just because it's by no means a preferred vendor on pricescope. I've seen and heard a few positive stories from people on here and elsewhere but also a lot of people on this forum specifically who prefer to avoid them. This stone kept speaking to me so I figured if I wanted to take a gamble then that was on me!

I was looking at tourmalines, but ultimately I want to be able to have the option of wearing this daily. The hardness and strength of sapphire is pretty important to me for both durability and also for the ring being something to be a little reminder that I'm stronger/can endure more than I sometimes think.

Thank you so much! I've got the other arm to look forward to once I make it through rehab on this current side, but hopefully that will be the last of it. I figured a mid way point present might be nice, plus if I'm sporting scars on my hands, wrists and elbows I may as well also sport all the jewels

Thank you too for the reassurance on NSC. I think I might have actually read a post from you mentioning them when I was doing some digging, either way I definitely read your selling horror story and hope it all works out smoothly ASAP for you <3 It's good to hear that the return process was smooth and helps make me second guess myself less though. The color may end up being too dark in person, but I absolutely adore moodier stones and ultimately I feel okay overpaying a little on something I can safely return than getting a good deal on something I can't that doesn't sing to me.

I hope that arm heals up soon and the other one is a text book recovery
I love green sapphires and will need a nice one to replace an ugly in the future so im very interested in how your ring turns out
i too love the olives and the forrest greens but through bitter experience (buying jewlery down the mall) im now weaey of stones being too dark and also windows
I am glad you have such a pretty project to put your mind to while you recover and best of luck for the other arm and finding the perfect green saphire
I look forward to hand shots
(With or without a plaster cast at the wrist)
Perhaps this is the project for this arm and it will prove so successful you will do another when the other arm is in plaster .... seems only fare

Oh honey... what on earth happened?! I'm so sorry to hear about this long journey to your better health, but I'm glad you're past the mid-point. At least you know what to expect now, so it will be less scary. Best wishes to you, my friend!

About NSC, yes, the president had some shady dealings in the past, and was exposed for illegally having negative reviews removed from yelp, google, and the like. I've seen this happen a lot, where certain unflattering reviews become relegated to the grayed-out "not recommended" area or removed entirely when a seller squawks. So I'm sure a lot of companies are guilty of this, but he got caught. In his case though, he was actually falsifying what had been a legitimate court order to include the removal of additional reviews. In any event, what he did was certainly contemptible and egregious. It's a shame too, because they have a heck of an inventory, and I've found them to have a respectable and reputable business practice otherwise. Anyway! I hope you love the stone (moody is such a great word for that type of coloration... love it). If not, return it and keep hunting. Good luck!!

I’ve used NSC for multiple purchases but I only buy small stones from them because their prices swell exponentially as the weight increases.

For me when I’m looking for a very specific colour / shape they have a good inventory and I like the customer experience. I also think their prices can be relatively reasonable at the sub-1ct level, especially as I don’t look for trade ideal colours but more from the “curiosities” portfolio.

Honestly green sapphires are tough to find and they do have a wide range. But you need to be very discerning. The true colour will only be seen on the videos they post NOT the light box stills. For me that is pretty dark - I prefer a mid tone. But that’s green sapphires for you - there is a good thread on here somewhere specifically on green sapphires. I will try to find it for you.

I just bought a purple one from these guys. Hasn’t arrived yet so I’m not sure how it will turn out. Will let you know if it’s as represented.

Don't forget there was another PSer on here recently looking for a green sapphire, which almost certainly resulted in this stone now being available through Inken. No idea what the price is, but it's a beautiful shade and very unusual in this size and clarity.

Thank you! perhaps I'll ask for the pricing. I think I'm looking for something a bit more olive toned though

Hi Everyone! Just an update to say thank you to all of you for all of your help so far, I appreciate it massively even if I haven't caught up with responding to everybody yet!

The stone arrived and as I was warned it's definitely darker (though not as much as the pictures make it seem). I was expecting that and totally happy with darker even though I know that's not everybody's cup of tea, but the bigger issue for me is that it is far too teal. I'm definitely looking for a richer dirtier olive green shade, otherwise I'd rather just go for an inky blue. I also think I need to get a fair bit more finger coverage for what I'm wanting to design and to outshine the scars  I've attached pictures below for anyone curious, but I now think I'm needing at the very minimum a 12x10+ mm stone. I've also attached a side view of my wrist (sorry!) to show why I definitely don't want to be wearing anything dainty. I need something extra chunky to balance me back out again.

I'm open to other cuts if anybody has any other magical stones they've seen? Preferences would be oval, cushion or emerald cut. Or if anybody has any other vendor suggestions I'm all ears. Budget would be ideally under 6k, but I'm probably happy saying under 10k if something gorgeous popped up!

You have beautiful long fingers and those scars will fade =)2
i like the teal but agree, olive would be nicer

Poor baby! Your hands are SO beautiful though. ♥

I really like that it has a touch of blue, but that's just me. If you prefer a more earthy or moody stone, as you said, then it's probably best to keep looking. I'm afraid I'm not much help as to what direction we should point you, but I'm sure another PS sleuth will be along to assist. Good luck!

Hey @crashsle, what did you think of lonysis' suggestion from gemselect? Looks like it might be the more olive color you're after, is the right size, and well under budget. :)

You are both so kind, thank you! ♥
Yes! The below stone is really intriguing. I might reach out and see if I can get a couple of photos or videos of it on a hand, but I'm also hoping to hear if @Ionysis has a good experience with them. Fingers crossed!
For price comparison

I bought from Gemselect years ago and I was perfectly happy with my purchases. Reviews on PS are mixed but my impression is it's because Gemselect generally offers lower-quality stones for lower prices, not because they have done anything disreputable. As long as there is a reasonable return policy, I would feel reasonably confident about a purchase.

That looks pretty
(I love the colour olive)

Agreed... I purchased a few accent stones from them previously, and was perfectly satisfied. I wouldn't necessarily say they carry "low quality" stones though. They're definitely on the value/budget end, but I'd consider the quality mid-range. When I hear the terms commercial grade or low quality, I'm thinking heavily-treated, highly-flawed material. But that's just me. :sun:

I think in my opinion, a heated Green sapphire for that price is a bit high, the one demantoidz just pictured above is unheated a 4 something ct is a good price at $725 if you can accept a little blue in your green, have you considered tsavorite as an alternative, the greens in those stones are very vivid and they are green as grass lol
You can find yourself a nice size well under 6g

Hi @Customblinger: I see you now have the Trade tag by your name. If that is the case, as a Trade member, you must refrain from commenting on the stones for sale posted by others. There have been cases where folks in the trade have said critical things about the wares of their competitors, or have talked up their own stones as better than others. You might want to reread the PS policies as well.

Thank you minusbijoux for motivating me to post on preloved jewellery for sale section, that was not my intention in the beginning, thank you minousbijoux for showing me the light

Based on the trade member rules you aren't supposed to post stuff you have for sale. I assume this would apply to the preloved forum as there is no mention of it being excluded in the section specifically for trade members.
  • Do not mention your products or services unless requested in the thread by a consumer.
  • Trade members must not promote nor condemn other businesses (unless there are evidences of misconduct or illegal practices). This includes promoting your own business through posting of your own jewelry, except in specific moderator-approved threads.

I normally won't recommend or not recommend a dealer here. That is not why I'm here, but David Weinberg who owns Multicolour is one of the most respected members of the colored gemstone industry and is an American, New York, if I remember correctly.

I added he is an American not because you cannot find shady American gemstone dealers out there, there are, but that his reputation is impeccable, and Americans generally feel safer buying from Americans.
