Hi Dseeker,

Could you please provide the crown & pavilion angles for us? That would be a great help for us in giving you some better advice on this stone. You can obtain the crown and pavilion angles from a Sarin report, which should be provided separately from the GIA certificate by your vendor.

Once you have this additional information, you can plug the numbers into the Holloway Cut Adviser (HCA). The HCA will give you a numerical rating on the how the diamond will perform for light return, fire, scintillation and spread. A score below 2 means that you are considering the top 5% of performers. It is a good tool to help you narrow down your search.

Also, ask the vendor for photos of the stone (Hearts and Arrows pics (if it is such), IdealScope image, inclusion photographs, etc.). In addition, you should find out the type, location, size and color of the inclusions within the stone and how eye clean it is (although with a VS2, this is not so much a significant issue).

Hope this helps. Good luck in your search and please keep us posted.

Thanks Linda,

The Vendor say that they do not have access to this information since it is a GIA stone. Should this be a red flag?

Hi Dseeker,

Buying an engagement ring is a tremendous financial and emotional decision for you. I find it unacceptable that a vendor could not provide you with this information given the importance of the choice that you are about to make. This has nothing to do as to whether the stone carries a GIA cert or not.

There are many great vendors here online and B&M that would be more than happy to give you those additional details. Don’t settle for anything less - remember, cut is king and those crown and pavilion angles are crucial to determing the make of the stone.

Just my 2 cents. Without more specs I can’t really comment any further on this diamond.

That being said, I respect your decision, should you choose to purchase this stone.
