Hello All:

Long time lurker, but new poster. I am in the process of looking at engagement rings and started the process by looking at local retailers. I found one retailer, in particular, that has gotten good reviews from friends/co-workers and they have been easy to work with and I feel comfortable with them. That said, I am looking at something in the 1.5-1.9ct range and looking to spend under $18,000 (for diamond only). I would prefer something D-F, SI1 (eye clean) and above (GIA).

The diamond in question is 1.7ct, F, Si1 (eye-clean), and scores a 1.2 on the HCA. It is VG/VG/VG, and has the following proportions: 61% Depth, 59% Table, 34% Crown, 40.4% Pavillion, slick to slightly thick...The retailer is giving me a price of $21,400, which I think is high.

What is a fair price for this stone? Can I do better? Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,
NCBGTN

I would strongly urge you to consider only GIA EX or AGS0 stones. I think you can do better from an online vendor if you are interested.

This one is about the same price but is significantly better cut than the one you are considering.

Hi NCBGTN!

First of all, congratulations!! =)

I think you should stick with Excellent cuts... doesn't have to be XXX, but X in cut for sure. This is what will make the diamond sparkle more. ;)) You have a very good budget, so I will see what I can find online because I do think that's high for the specs.

Are you open to trusted online vendors? If so, I believe you will get a lot nicer diamond for your money. :))

I think this would be perfect for you!!! It is a BG Blue, so it will look really white! The cut is spectacular! $17,993
